Job summary

University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking a Steam Fireman I to operate the Central Heating Plant equipment and systems and assist with maintenance tasks. The role requires performing plant shift operations, monitoring gauges, and ensuring safe handling of ammonia water treatment chemicals, LNG, and fuel oil.

You will maintain logs, follow safety procedures, and support routine troubleshooting under supervision.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read and write effectively in English and do basic math.
  • Knowledge of power plant mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Power Plant equipment and systems.
  • Ability to learn basic chemistry related to water treatment.
  • Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, and power plant devices.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools and rigging equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • General knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Performs Central Heating Plant shift operations under supervision, including startup and shutdown of equipment.
  • Complies with all site safety requirements and procedures.
  • Maintains shift operating logs and records.
  • Performs routine chemical testing and reads gauges/meters.
  • Opens/closes valves and adjusts controls to regulate flows.
  • Responsible for safe receiving, handling, and storage of chemicals and LNG.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work areas and equipment.
  • Utilizes Central Heating Plant maintenance management system and follows safety practices.
  • Performs other duties assigned by Lead Operator/ Maintenance Manager.
