Headwater Science is hiring an Advanced Statistical Software Developer to translate cutting-edge methodological research into scalable software for real-world evidence and causal inference.

You will collaborate with epidemiologists and statisticians to design and implement an M-estimation engine with an R interface, build data pipelines, and ensure robust software quality across production environments. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related STEM field.
  • 3+ years of experience developing statistical software or data processing systems.
  • Experience in R programming language.
  • Strong knowledge of M-estimation theory and its implementation.
  • Background in causal inference methods for observational data.
  • Experience building high-quality statistical software.

The Role

The Advanced Statistical Software Developer helps build the next generation of tools for real-world evidence and causal inference research.

In this role, you will work closely with epidemiologists and statisticians to translate advanced methodological research into high-quality software used to analyze observational health data. You’ll help design and develop statistical infrastructure that enables researchers to perform rigorous causal inference at scale.

What You’ll Do
  • Design and develop a novel M-estimation engine and statistical estimators with an R interface
  • Partner with epidemiologists and statisticians to translate methodological research into production software
  • Build tools that streamline epidemiological research workflows and data analysis

What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related STEM field
  • 3+ years of experience developing statistical software or data processing systems
  • Experience in R
  • Strong interest in supporting epidemiological and causal inference research through software development
  • Deep understanding of M-estimation theory and implementation
  • Knowledge of mathematical optimization techniques
  • Expertise in causal inference methods for observational data
  • Experience building high-quality statistical software
Nice to Have
  • Experience with functional programming
  • Familiarity with CI/CD workflows for scientific software
  • Experience with large-scale data processing pipelines
  • Experience with AWS services such as Batch, S3, and EC2
  • Command-line workflows in UNIX/Linux environments
  • Background in epidemiological research and causal inference is preferred.
