Job summary

NW Natural is seeking a Station Design Engineer in Portland, OR to lead design engineering and construction coordination for large commercial and industrial projects. You will ensure service continuity, manage budgets, and align with safety and engineering standards.

The role requires a bachelor’s in engineering, 0-3 years (Level 1) or 3-5 years (Level 2) experience, and may require PE registration. Hybrid work with onsite Tue-Thu and some travel is possible, supporting diverse, safe operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or civil engineering or equivalent.
  • 0-3 years of experience for Level 1 or 3-5 years for Level 2.
  • Plans and ability to register as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desired.
  • Minimum 1 year construction-related experience or utility construction.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex construction programs and communicate with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Performs design engineering, planning, coordination, and monitoring of projects related to plants and stations.
  • Provides cost analysis of alternatives to determine cost effective installation practices.
  • Proactively identify risks and implement mitigation strategies for timely project completion.
  • Provides design and project management for NW Natural's gas facilities and equipment.
  • Reviews and approves construction drawings; coordinates with office and field personnel.
  • Supports field operations with day-to-day engineering; collaborates with telecom/technical staff.
  • Assists in budgeting and cost-benefit analysis; seeks cost reductions and revenue opportunities.
  • Learn Synergi Gas software for system modeling analysis.
  • Develops alternative engineering solutions to inform decision makers.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Supports a culture of safe work practices.

NOTE

This hybrid position is based at our headquarters in downtown Portland, Oregon. Candidates must reside within commuting distance of the office or be willing to relocate to the Portland metropolitan area. Employees are required to work onsite Tuesdays through Thursdays each week, with remote work flexibility on Mondays and Fridays, subject to business needs. This schedule supports collaboration, connection, and team engagement while providing flexibility for focused remote work.

Position Summary

Perform design engineering and oversee construction coordination of projects requiring a higher level of project management and/or technical knowledge. Provide design and project management expertise for NW Natural's large commercial and industrial meter sets, district regulating stations, telemetry sites, and city gate station projects. Ensure service continuity and fulfillment of installation commitments while meeting customer needs, cost objectives, governmental requirements, and safety and engineering standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs and oversees design engineering, planning, coordination, and monitoring of projects related to plants and stations.
  • Provides cost analysis of alternatives to determine cost effective installation practices.
  • Proactively identify risks and implement mitigation strategies to ensure timely and successful project completion.
  • Provides design and project management expertise for NW Natural's gas storage facilities, compressors, control systems, odorization, and CNG/LNG equipment.
  • Reviews and approves construction drawings within the territory to ensure engineering standards are followed. Coordinates with office and field personnel to optimize the use of resources.
  • Provide day-to-day engineering support to field operations while maintaining project workload.
  • Work closely with telecommunications experts and other technical specialists within the organization, fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Assists in preparing budget, analyzing costs/benefits; continuously evaluates cost reduction and revenue enhancement opportunities.
  • Ability to learn Synergi Gas software to perform system modeling analysis.
  • Develops alternative engineering solutions to proposed projects to inform cost based decision makers.
  • This position may require travel.

Qualifications
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably mechanical or civil engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Engineering (Level 1) requires 0-3 years of experience Engineering (Level 2) requires 3-5 years of experience
  • Plans and ability to register as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desired.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in construction-related work required or utility construction/installation.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role overseeing and coordinating complex planning and project implementation programs.
  • Ability to plan and effectively manage a wide variety of construction projects.
  • Demonstrated skill in organizing multiple tasks and managing time effectively to meet deadlines and balance priorities consistent with Company strategies and goals.
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of the following: federal pipeline safety rules, American Public Works Association, construction standards, and OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, government representatives and contractor personnel on technical matters governing construction projects.
  • Ability to analyze budget reports and construction summaries.
  • Ability to understand and utilize 2D ACAD software.
  • Ability to develop new construction approaches and procedures.
  • Writing skills including technical documentation and report preparation.
  • Ability to visit and access construction and other work site locations as required.
  • Possess/maintain a valid Oregon or Washington driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

Base salary range: $74,800.00 - $102,600.00 (Level 1) or$88,700.00-$126,350.00 (Level 2) per year, depending on qualifications

Annual Target Incentive: Level 1, 7.5% target
Level 2, 9.5% target
Targets are calculated using eligible earnings during plan year participation. Payout, if earned, is based on company and individual performance for each plan year and may range from 0% - 200% of target. Targets are subject to change in subsequent plan years. Must be employed by September 30 in order to receive any prorated payout.
