Professional Engineer 2 - State Structure Quality Engineer Oregon Department of Transportation Delivery & Operations Division - Statewide Project Delivery Branch Construction Section / Structure Services Unit Salem

The role: Our Statewide Project Delivery Branch is hiring! As the state structure quality engineer, you will travel across Oregon to visit active projects, as required, to ensure proper implementation of plans and specifications, proper handling and installation of materials, and statewide uniformity in construction and construction inspection practices. You will also advise, assist and coordinate between our agency’s sections, regions and consultants to support efficient communication, change analysis and field interpretations of contract requirements.

Application is prioritized at Professional Engineer 2 level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for a Professional Engineer 1 ($7,049 - $10,936) to apply, as we may consider underfilling the position until the selected candidate meets the minimum qualifications for a Professional Engineer 2. Underfill training will not exceed three years.

A day in the life:

• Identify solutions and resolve problems encountered while constructing bridges and other structures.
• Provide expert construction inspection instruction and support to inspectors and other field personnel.
• Visit all structure construction project sites frequently to monitor construction processes and issues; drive a passenger vehicle in cities and on highways statewide daily.
• Maintain professional and collaborative working relationships with field construction personnel and contractors.
• Review and inspect structure construction projects for adherence to specifications and conformance to best construction practices.
• Recommend improvements to structure designs, specifications, materials and construction practices.
• Develop and administer the Bridge Construction Inspector Training Program; direct and/or train field personnel in inspection techniques of structure construction projects.
• Provide technical expertise on the constructability of structure designs and review construction plans and specifications prior to advertisement.
• Investigate and make recommendations regarding new methods or equipment used in the construction of structures.
• Assemble and correlate data gathered from structure construction projects and prepare reports recommending changes or improvements in construction processes or designs.

Statewide travel required with occasional extended workdays and night work – travel frequency varies depending on the number of active bridge projects and locations.

Outdoor work at project sites is expected more than 50% of the time and involves working at heights 20 feet or more above ground/water and exposure to traffic, terrain, construction and weather hazards.

Minimum qualifications:

Special qualifications:

• Skilled in a broad range of engineering principles and knowledgeable of construction practices related to bridges.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver formal training related to bridge construction.
