Job description

Standardized Patients (SPs) are trained individuals who portray patients, family members, or caregivers in a consistent, believable, and repeatable manner for the purpose of teaching and evaluating health‑care learners. SPs assist in developing learners’ communication, assessment, clinical reasoning, and interpersonal skills by participating in structured clinical encounters in a simulated environment. This is for an off‑site location at the Oakland West Center (OC) 1500 University Dr, Auburn Hills, MI 48326.

  • Portray a patient case exactly as trained, including medical history, symptoms, emotions, behaviors, and affect.
  • Participate in learner encounters including interviews, health histories, focused and/or full physical assessments depending on scenario design.
  • Accurately recall and document details of the encounter for student feedback or evaluation forms.
  • Provide constructive, behavior‑based feedback to learners as trained.
  • Follow scenario scripts and maintain consistency across repeated sessions so all learners encounter the same case conditions.
  • Wear appropriate attire or moulage based on scenario requirements.
  • Allow limited physical examination when specified and trained for safety.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student performance and program materials.
  • Participate in training sessions to learn cases, behaviors, timing, and feedback models.
Required Qualifications

  • Excellent listening and communication skills.

  • Comfort with repeated clinical examinations that are non‑invasive and trained for safety.
  • Professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience as an SP, actor, educator, or in performance‑based roles.
  • Experience providing structured feedback to learners.
  • Comfort portraying emotionally complex scenarios (grief, anxiety, chronic illness) when applicable.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, or lie down for periods depending on scenario needs.
  • Tolerance for basic physical examination (non‑invasive only).
  • Ability to portray symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, or weakness as scripted.
Work Schedule
  • Scheduled on an as‑needed basis depending on simulation events.
  • Encounters may occur during daytime, evenings, or weekends based on program needs.
