Job summary

Beckman Coulter Diagnostics in Chaska, MN, seeks a Staff Vision Engineer to develop machine vision for automated inspection systems used in medical device manufacturing. You will contribute to improving efficiency, accuracy, and reliability of manufacturing processes across Beckman Coulter sites and lead cross-functional design reviews.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's in engineering with 9+ years of experience or Master’s with 7+ years.
• Demonstrated expertise in automated vision inspection platforms (Cognex/Keyence).
• Ability to design and program vision hardware/software (cameras, optics, lighting, image processing).
• Experience integrating vision systems with PLC/SCADA and automation platforms.
• Strong leadership in design reviews, external supplier interfacing, and project execution.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary machine vision liaison across global manufacturing to develop a global roadmap and align initiatives with business goals.
• Design, configure, and develop image acquisition systems including camera, optics, lighting and calibrations; select appropriate cameras and lensing.
• Lead component integration and calibration, perform advanced image processing, and apply deep learning-based inspections.
• Lead design reviews with contractors and engineers, provide guidance and status updates for stakeholders.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to hiring and onboarding.

Staff Vision Engineer is responsible for developing machine vision technology of manufacturing equipment systems for automated inspections of high-quality components used in medical devices. Your work will contribute to improving the efficiency, accuracy, and reliability of manufacturing processes across Beckmans global manufacturing sites.

This position reports to the Automation Engineering Manager and is part of the Global Equipment Automation team located in Chaska, MN, and will be an onsite role

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

• Serve as the primary machine vision strategic liaisonover global manufacturing operations to develop a comprehensive global roadmap for machine vision, align initiatives with the company's overarching business strategy, growth objectives, operational needs, and sustainment.
• Design, configure, and develop image acquisition manufacturing equipment systems, including vision platform selection, camera selection, optic lens selections, lighting, and calibrations techniques. Equipment selections could include area/line scan cameras, GigE/USB/Camera Link.
• Select and integrate appropriate components: industrial cameras such as area/line scan cameras, GigE/USB/Camera Link. PC based and smart cameras. Lensing - telecentric and non-telecentric, color filters, various illumination methods such as back/front lighting, low angle, coaxial, and bright field.
• Implement advanced algorithms: edge detection, morphological operations such as erosion and dilation, sub-pixel accuracy measurement, camera calibration and deep learning-based inspections.
• Actively lead design reviews with contractors, engineering consultants, and other project team members. Influence vision related engineering decisions, provide guidance, and project status updates as required for project review and other company meetings.

The essential requirements of the job include:

• Educational Background: Bachelors in engineering including machine vision with 9+ years of experience, or masters with 7+ years.
• Technical Expertise: Demonstrated and advanced expertise in designing and implementing automated vision inspection system platforms such as Cognex and Keyence. Configure and program vision system hardware and software such as camera, optics, lighting and image processing tool. Integrate vision systems with automation platforms including PLCs and SCADA systems.
• Project Leadership: Demonstrated ability to independently manage and drive automation projects including interfacing external suppliers & internal resources, design reviews, debugging, installation, and training within project specs.
• Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication, capable of articulating complex technical concepts for stakeholders. Mentors junior engineers and contributes to hiring and onboarding.
• Continuous Improvement: Demonstrates a proactive mindset for process optimization and problem-solving. Stay up to date with advancements in vision inspection technologies and methodologies.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

• Experience deploying AI and deep learning algorithms into production.
• Experience with other machine automation software platforms such as: Allen Bradley PLCs, robotics, motion control, electrical drawing packages such as AutoCAD.
• Experience with medical device regulatory requirements (IQ,OQ, PQ), and compliance requirements related to deploying machine vision system within medical device industry.

The annual salary range OR the hourly range for this role is $140K - $155K. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.

This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
