Job summary

Google Hardware is seeking a Staff UX Engineer to shape spatial experiences across emerging devices. You will work with software engineers, designers, researchers, and product managers to prototype and evolve interaction models for XR environments.

Qualifications

• Must have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years in a Technical, UX or Design setting.
• Experience with physical prototyping, interaction design and design processes.
• Experience collaborating with Designers, Researchers, Engineers, Content Strategists and PMs throughout the design process.
• Experience prototyping and developing UX across XR platforms using Unity, OpenXR and WebXR.
• Experience with design tools like Figma and Adobe CC.

• Develop and contribute to AR system architecture, interaction model, and UI framework with the UX team and cross-functional partners.
• Own and deliver prototyping work as part of a prototype-driven design process.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to define product goals and execute aligned plans.

• Define and communicate vision for interaction design systems and patterns and justify decisions.

Minimum qualifications

Preferred qualifications

• Experience in collaborating with User Research to craft usability studies for prototypes.
• Familiarity with ARCore, Jetpack Compose, and Material Design.
• Demonstrated ability to take design concepts from drawing board to shipped features.
• Effective communicator across different functions with the ability to understand different perspectives, articulate positions, and advocate for user needs.

About the job

Design is at the forefront of everything we do. As a UX Engineer on the Google Hardware team, you will leverage your breadth as a UX Engineer and technologist with your depth in spatial UX to define every aspect of an emerging device category with very little precedent in the real world.

You will work closely with Software Engineers, Interaction Designers, Visual designers, UX Researchers, Product leads and Hardware teams to bring spatial experiences to life, shaping how users interact with this groundbreaking technology, and laying the foundation for new interaction models and design patterns that influence future product generations. As part of a small team, you'll need to be inventive and creative in building prototypes that explore new interaction models and experiences, sometimes filling in as a UX designer when you come across gaps or open questions.

US Salary: $188,000 - $274,000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross-functional and cross-product teams, including but not limited to interaction, visual and industrial designers and User Research to define the product goals, contribute to product strategy, and execute on the aligned goals.
• Solve ambiguous and complex design problems involving both screen-space and spatial design.
• Help define visionary but pragmatic interaction design systems and patterns, execute on final designs, and communicate user narratives with strategic reasoning behind design decisions.
