Burns & McDonnell is seeking a staff transmission engineer to join our employee-owned team, which is consistently ranked among the top transmission and distribution firms in the nation. This role is a key technical position within our project teams, delivering engineering designs for critical infrastructure, including high-voltage overhead and underground transmission lines.
Key tasks include:
- Lead the full lifecycle of transmission design by transforming initial engineering concepts into fully detailed, construction-ready designs.
- Utilize PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and Tower software to perform structural modeling, line routing, and clearance evaluations.
- Develop comprehensive design basis and criteria documents to establish foundational design parameters and technical requirements for project execution.
- Adapt and refine critical transmission components to match specific project parameters and requirements.
- Draft detailed specifications and data sheets for packaged transmission equipment, manage requests for qualifications, evaluate technical bids, and deliver strategic purchase recommendations.
- Perform critical technical analyses, including economic conductor selection, lightning performance modeling, and grounding system calculations.
- Calculate essential electrical clearances based on national safety codes and client standards.
- Coordinate directly with utility clients to establish design criteria, resolve project challenges, and maintain alignment on technical deliverables.
- Gather critical project data, conduct technical studies, write precise engineering specifications, and compile comprehensive project reports.
- Complete QAQCs to deliver high quality design deliverables.
- Support business development activities by assisting in the preparation of technical proposals, scope definitions, and engineering cost estimates.
- Mentor and support junior engineers by providing technical oversight, sharing industry practices, and assisting with their professional development.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program, and 3 years of transmission engineering experience required. Consulting preferred.
- Or Bachelor's Degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of transmission engineering experience required (consulting experience preferred).
- Or Master's Degree in Civil Engineering and 2 years of transmission engineering experience required (consulting experience preferred).
- Strong knowledge of standard civil/structural engineering techniques and procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment, and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Strong computer skills (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD), and/or hydraulic, hydrologic, pavement, transmission analysis programs.
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Engineers in Training (EIT) Certification preferred.
Compensation
$105,000.00-155,000.00 Yearly
The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
