Job summary

Waymo's Systems Engineering team is seeking a seasoned engineer to define requirements, system architecture, and verification strategies for depot and offhaul automation features, driving robust end-to-end performance across the Waymo fleet.

You will debug field issues with cross-functional teams, extend features to new vehicle platforms for parity, and apply your depth across software and hardware to learn quickly under a Systems Engineering Lead in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, or related technical field.
• 8+ years in systems engineering, software development, or related field.
• Systems engineering mindset and data-driven problem solving.
• Able to manage multiple projects and work in ambiguity.
• Ability to read C++ to understand feature implementations and debug issues.
• Ability to query data sets (SQL) and create dashboards for debugging.

Responsibilities

• Work with cross functional teams to develop and implement requirements, system architecture, and verification strategy for depot & offhail automation features.
• Develop deep technical understanding of depot & offhail automation features and drive end-to-end verification and monitoring.
• Develop qualification methods to launch new features and depots and provide engineering recommendations to senior stakeholders.
• Debug field issues to determine root cause and identify solutions with cross functional teams; lead retrospectives and improve test coverage.
• Extend existing depot automation features to new vehicle platforms to ensure feature parity across Waymo fleet.
• Apply technical depth to new areas and learn quickly as part of a hybrid team.

This role follows a hybrid work schedule and you will report to a Systems Engineering Lead.

You will:

• Work with cross functional teams including software engineers, product managers, and operations leads to develop and implement requirements, system architecture, and verification strategy for new depot & offhail automation features. You will help automate these processes to drive greater fleet efficiency including automated low power mode switching, downloading and installing new software, logging and offloading data, and more.
• Develop deep technical understanding of existing and new depot & offhail automation features and drive a robust end-to-end verification and monitoring system to ensure these features meet high efficacy goals
• Develop qualification methods to launch new features and depots and provide engineering recommendations to senior stakeholders
• Debug field issues to determine root cause and identify solutions with cross functional teams. Be the point person for retrospectives and implement improvements to test coverage and processes to prevent similar issues from happening in the future
• Extend existing depot automation features to new vehicle platforms to ensure feature parity across the diverse Waymo fleet.
• Apply your existing technical depth to new areas and learn quickly

You have:

• A bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or other technical field
• At least 8 years of experience in systems engineering, software development, or related field
• A systems engineering mindset and a proactive, data-driven approach to fixing problems
• Comfortable juggling multiple projects at once and working in ambiguity
• Ability to read c++ to understand feature implementation and debug issues more effectively
• Ability to query data sets (SQL) and create dashboards for debugging and performance monitoring

We prefer:

• Strong foundation in system engineering fundamentals such as requirements definition, formal verification and validation methods
• Experience with test development including simulation and hardware in the loop
• Experience deploying products at scale
• Experience with software integration testing
• Experience deploying products at scale

Salary Range

$230,000 – $284,000 USD
