Job summary

Burns & McDonnell seeks a Staff Structural Engineer to design structures for transmission and distribution projects. You will adapt plans across conceptual to design completion, mentor junior engineers, and ensure QA/QC in collaboration with project teams.

The role requires ABET-accredited degrees, FE/advanced credentials, and strong communication with multi-disciplinary teams. Located in Atlanta with opportunities across several US locations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or ABET-accredited related degree with 3 years of structural experience.
  • Alternate: BE/BS in Structural/Engineering Technology, FE, and 3 years experience.
  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering with 2 years experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural design from concept through design completion.
  • Modify and review production drawings for transmission and distribution projects.
  • Design structural components per project manager requirements.
  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.
  • Conduct field inspections and QA/QC to ensure standards.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines and maintain safety compliance.

Description

The Staff Structural Engineer will work on project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of transmission and distribution projects across multiple clients in the public and private sector. The Staff Structural Engineer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting structural plans and specifications according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.

  • Perform structural design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
  • Modify and review production drawings for a variety of transmission and distribution projects.
  • Design structural components for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.
  • Applies strong knowledge of commonly used structural engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the structural engineering services industry.
  • Research and compile project related data as required by the project managers.
  • Quality review production drawings for a variety of projects and project related data as required by the project managers to verify corrections are made within multiple CAD related software.
  • Compiles information for client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the structural engineering practice. Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.
  • Performs field inspections, measurements or calculations for public and private clients.
  • Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.
  • Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines.
  • Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program and 3 years of structural engineering experience required.
  • Or Bachelor’s degree Bachelor of Science in Structural or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program, successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of structural engineering experience required.
  • Or Master Degree of Science degree in Structural Engineering and 2 years of structural engineering experience required.
  • Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills. Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong computer skills include structural analysis programs (e.g., RISA 3D), AutoCAD, and MathCAD.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
  • Experience with structural engineering for electrical substations.
  • Experience with full lifecycle EPC project delivery.
  • Strong knowledge of structural design codes (e.g., IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE 7) including ASCE manual of practice (MOP) 113.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
