Job summary

United States Digital Space LLC is seeking a Staff Engineer to steer Spark Structured Streaming's technical direction across OSS and our Data Intelligence Platform. You will architect enhancements for state management, new operators, and latency/throughput gains, while reimagining the engine to reduce cost.

You will mentor engineers, set long-term architecture, and partner with product teams to align strategy with customer needs.

Qualifications

• BS or higher in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years building big-data, Spark, or database internals.
• Interest in database/storage/distributed systems, language design, or performance optimization.
• Able to work toward a multi-year vision with incremental deliverables.
• Proven track record delivering features with high operating quality and reliability.
• Comfortable working cross-functionally with product mgmt and customers.

The role

We're seeking an experienced Staff Engineer to drive the technical direction of Spark Structured Streaming, spanning both open source and the company-specific components. Your mission is to make Spark Structured Streaming the state-of-the-art stream processing engine — adding advanced capabilities such as sophisticated state management and new operators, while re-imagining the engine's architecture to drive improvements for latency, throughput, and cost.

What we look for:

• BS (or higher) in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
• 8+ years building related systems — big-data ecosystems, Apache Spark, or database internals
• A passion for database systems, storage systems, distributed systems, language design, or performance optimization
• Comfortable working toward a multi-year vision with incremental deliverables
• A track record of delivering features while maintaining a high bar for operational excellence and engineering quality
• Comfortable working cross-functionally with product management and directly with customers, with the ability to deeply understand the product and customer personas

Pay Range Transparency

The pay range(s) for this role is listed below and represents the expected salary range for non-commissionable roles or on-target earnings for commissionable roles. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, depth of experience, relevant certifications and training, and specific work location. Based on the factors above, the company anticipates utilizing the full width of the range. The total compensation package for this position may also include eligibility for annual performance bonus, equity, and the benefits listed above.
