Job summary

Anthropic is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for Code RL Research & Engineering in offices across San Francisco, New York City, and Seattle. You will design APIs and frameworks that researchers rely on, and embed with research teams to understand their needs while shaping scalable, safe software foundations.

You will improve reliability of production RL runs, anticipate silent failures, and mentor engineers while helping set engineering standards.

Qualifications

• Deep expertise in Python, including typing and async patterns.
• Experience designing intuitive, safe APIs or frameworks adopted by teams.
• Experience working productively in large or research-style codebases you didn't write.
• Ability to anticipate failure modes and prevent them structurally via design and testing.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design widely-used APIs, frameworks, and abstractions for engineers and researchers.
• Embed with research teams on a rotational basis to understand needs and transfer ownership.
• Work directly in research codebases to improve reliability and structure.
• Contribute to production RL systems reliability, including monitoring and triage tooling.
• Help define engineering standards and mentor researchers and engineers.
