Carta is seeking a Staff Engineer to anchor the Middle Office domain, owning long-term technical health and strategic direction across private equity and VC workflows.
You’ll lead cross-team initiatives and guide architecture in Python/Django, React, and Postgres, defining AI-enabled data ingestion, portfolio valuation, and fund forecasting. The role requires 10+ years of experience and strong leadership for a fast-growing private capital platform.
Carta is the connected platform and AI-native ecosystem for private capital. Built to replace fragmented tools with a single system of record, Carta brings together the software, services, and legal infrastructure that founders use to manage equity, fund managers use to run administration and reporting, and legal teams use to close transactions. Trusted by 55,000 companies and 1.8M+ equity holders in 160+ countries, and 10,000 funds and SPVs representing $250B+ in assets under management, Carta is transforming how private capital operates. Recognized by Fortune, Forbes, Fast Company, Inc. and Great Places to Work.

As a Staff Engineer at Carta, you are a technical anchor for our business. You don't just own features, you take long-term accountability for the technical health and strategic direction of different domains.
Middle Office is where Carta's two client bases meet. Our cap table products serve companies; our fund administration products serve funds. Middle Office serves the investment firm sitting between them, and owns what happens after the check clears: collecting data from portfolio companies, valuing the holdings, modeling the fund's outcome, and reporting the result to LPs.
You’ll work across a connected suite of products for PE and VC firms, fund administrators, and institutional investors, with a primary focus today on private equity, AI-powered ingestion of portfolio company financials and KPIs, portfolio valuation and allocation models, waterfall and fund forecasting across complex multi-entity structures, and a unified view of a firm’s holdings, including companies that don't use Carta for equity management. Sitting in the middle of Carta's ERP, most of what we build ships in partnership with other teams.
As a Staff Engineer within the Middle Office pillar, you are responsible for the long-term technical health and success of the business unit. You'll work to:
The Tech Stack: You are an expert in building distributed systems. While our primary stack is Python/Django, React, and Postgres, you should be comfortable guiding technical direction across JVM languages, gRPC, and cloud-native infrastructure (AWS).
Leadership: You lead through influence rather than authority, acting as a role model for constructive communication and technical discipline.
Vision: You don't just solve the problem in front of you; you anticipate future roadblocks and build systems that support long‑term business growth.
Experience: We recommend 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of high‑level technical leadership.
Carta’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary, equity for all full time roles, exceptional benefits, and, for applicable roles, commissions plans. Our minimum cash compensation (salary + commission if applicable) range for this role is:
$240,000 - $300,000 in San Francisco, CA
Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on geography, candidate experience and expertise, and other factors.
