Job summary

Google LLC in Sunnyvale, CA is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Google Workspace Data Export Platform. You will own the overarching architecture across sub-teams, drive technical direction, and ensure scalable, reliable data export for domain-wide takeout and Google Vault.

The role partners with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and Tech Leads to set technical direction and deliver high-quality execution in a large-scale, matrixed environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience programming in Java.
• 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products.
• 5 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.
• 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Responsibilities

• Own the overarching architecture, interfaces, and data models across multiple services.
• Define the technical roadmap, identifying scalability bottlenecks, architectural risks, and structural tech debt before they impact velocity or reliability.
• Provide technical direction and guidance to project/stream tech leads, ensuring localized technical decisions align with organizational goals.
• Identify cross-team architectural and technical dependencies, resolve conflicting priorities, and eliminate single points of failure.
• Write code for high-risk proof-of-concepts or critical-path components while delegating day-to-day feature implementation to development teams.
