Job summary

Hex is seeking a Staff or Principal-level software engineer for its Compute team. You will own performance and architecture for a backend-heavy stack that runs from notebooks to petabyte-scale data queries. Expect to drive architecture, design, and long-term roadmap while remaining hands-on in code.

You will shape execution, parallelism, and caching strategies, mentor teammates, and work across remote-first teams. This role is fully remote within the US Eastern timezone with NYC office option.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience with a focus on computation, performance, and systems architecture.
• Experience with parallel execution strategies, caching, and remote data warehouse computation trade-offs.
• Proven ability to design and review large-scale data systems and mentor teammates.

Responsibilities

• Evolve execution architecture for faster, smarter compute components.
• Drive parallel execution strategies and caching to reduce latency.
• Instrument complex systems to diagnose performance and surface actionable insights.
• Collaborate with engineering and product to support new platform capabilities.
• Author and review technical proposals; mentor engineers to implement ambitious designs.
• Roadmap long-term designs with milestones across quarters.
