Staff Software Engineer, AI

Location: New York, NY
Employment Type: Full-Time
Compensation: $200,000 - $400,000 base + equity

We are working with a growing technology company in New York City that is looking for a Staff Software Engineer with strong experience building and deploying modern AI applications.

This is a highly hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys building new products, solving complex technical problems, and taking significant ownership from initial design through production. You will work across software engineering and artificial intelligence to develop reliable systems used in real-world environments.

What You'll Do

• Design, build, and deploy production-grade software and AI applications
• Own major technical initiatives from initial architecture through production
• Develop backend services, APIs, integrations, and application infrastructure
• Build systems that incorporate large language models and other modern AI technologies
• Integrate AI capabilities with existing applications, data sources, and business systems
• Improve the reliability, scalability, performance, and quality of production applications
• Evaluate new technologies and determine where they can meaningfully improve products and engineering workflows
• Work closely with engineering, product, and business teams to turn complex requirements into working software
• Help establish architecture patterns, engineering standards, and technical best practices
• Provide technical leadership while remaining highly hands-on with development

What We're Looking For

• Strong software engineering and computer science fundamentals
• Experience operating at a Staff, Lead, Principal, or comparable level of technical ownership
• Strong experience building and shipping production software
• Proficiency with Python, TypeScript, or similar modern programming languages
• Experience designing backend services, APIs, and distributed applications
• Hands-on experience developing applications using large language models or modern AI technologies
• Experience deploying and operating applications in cloud environments
• Strong understanding of software architecture, system design, and production engineeringAbility to take ambiguous technical problems from concept through production
• Experience working in a startup or fast-growing technology environment
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
• Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building production applications using LLMs
• Experience with retrieval, tool use, model integrations, or multi-step AI applications
• Experience building new products or platforms from an early stage
• Experience working directly with customers or external stakeholders
• Experience with modern cloud infrastructure and DevOps practices
• Previous technical leadership experience

Compensation

The anticipated base salary range is $200,000 - $400,000 per year, depending on experience and technical expertise, plus equity.

This is a full-time position based in New York City.
