Job summary

Ibotta is seeking a Staff Software Engineer in Denver, CO for a hybrid role requiring three in-office days per week. You will build scalable, fault-tolerant systems, apply AI to development and production, and lead projects across a collaborative team.

Candidates must be US-based with a strong foundation in CS and modern tech stacks. You will own end-to-end technical solutions, participate in architecture decisions, and drive best practices within a nimble engineering group.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of software development experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Analytics or related field.
  • Mastery of relevant techs and data stores; knowledge when to use each.
  • Deep understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software architecture.
  • Experience building highly scalable, observable, fault-tolerant systems.
  • Proficient in using AI tools for prototyping, testing, debugging, and production-grade code.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCloud) and IaC (Terraform).

Ibotta is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our innovative team and contribute to our mission to Make Every Purchase Rewarding by building something great with us. As part of the engineering team, you will work on the technology solutions that power our products that are used by millions of consumers. We're looking for a self-motivated engineer who has a real passion for building and running large-scale, fault-tolerant applications. Success in this role means not only understanding the right solutions and how to build them, but also embracing innovative means of collaborating with and leveraging AI to do so. Every engineer has input into our engineering culture, our products and development processes, and will have a real impact as part of a small, nimble team.

This position is located in Denver, Colorado as a hybrid position requiring 3 days in office, (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). Candidates must live in the United States.

What you will be doing:
  • Build products and tools, using the right language/tool for the job, that drive valuable impact to Ibotta, our customers, or fellow engineers

  • Work collaboratively with a highly talented cross-functional team to design, develop and deliver new products and features that will be used by millions of users

  • Use Amazon’s AWS infrastructure and advanced services daily, including serverless architectures

  • Stay abreast of the ever-changing technology landscape to identify the best tools and technologies to design and build flexible, scalable, reliable and high-performing applications

  • Maintain an agile, experimental and iterative approach, with a willingness to learn fast in a constantly evolving and uncertain environment

  • Decompose complex business problems and requirements into manageable sub-tasks

  • Know how to skillfully and judiciously leverage AI to assist with software development

  • Know when to choose AI as part of the tech stack and how to use it when building products, and operating them in production

  • Demonstrate leadership by offering guidance to team members, cultivating their technical aptitude, and championing best practices within the development process.

  • Leverage and contribute to our CI/CD pipeline to deploy code many times daily

  • Write tests and participate in code reviews to ensure that we're shipping high-quality, maintainable code, and develop evaluators to verify the quality of non-deterministic outputs

  • Own your technical solutions end-to-end from contributing your ideas, to first code commit, to operating in production

What we are looking for:
  • 7+ years of experience in software development

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Analytics or a related field required

  • Mastery of relevant technologies such as Typescript, Ruby on Rails, Java, Kotin, Nodejs, Vue, Swift, etc, and data stores such as MySQL, DynamoDB, Redis, etc. is valuable, but knowing when to use each is far more important

  • Deep understanding of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, and software architecture.

  • Deep understanding of building highly scalable, observable, and fault tolerant systems

  • Mastery of applying core computer science concepts to iterative system design

  • Highly skilled in using AI tools for prototyping, writing, testing, debugging, and comprehending code, and the ability to critically review and improve AI-generated code to meet production standards

  • Proficient in context engineering and AI building blocks such as LLM API calls, prompting techniques, agentic frameworks, RAG, vector databases, and model fine-tuning

  • Proven experience with debugging and testing approaches, and frameworks from unit testing to automated testing and evaluation driven development

  • Proven experience building, deploying and operating automated workflows and agents, using platforms such as n8n, Databricks or similar

  • Deep understanding of development best practices including observability, alerting and SLOs for services, security, compliance, performance, optimization, reliability, cost efficiency, etc.

  • Proven experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCloud, or similar and with DevOps best practices and Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g. Terraform)

Additional Details:
  • This position is located in Denver, CO and includes competitive pay, flexible time off, benefits package (including medical, dental, vision), Employee Stock Purchase Program, and 401k match. Denver office perks include paid parking, snacks, and occasional meals.

  • Base compensation range: $160,000 - $183,000. Equity is included in overall compensation package. This compensation range is specific to the United States labor market and may be adjusted based on actual experience.
