Job summary

Black & Veatch’s Structural Services Team seeks an experienced Structural Engineer to support Hydropower and Hydraulic Structures design projects. The staff-level engineer will analyze, design, and supervise challenging facilities such as powerhouses, dams, and spillways.

You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, mentor junior staff, and uphold engineering standards and safety. Travel up to 20% to client sites; PE/ABET credentials preferred.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited Structural or Civil Eng. degree required.
• Professional registration in at least one state, with ability to obtain more.
• Minimum 5 years of related structural design experience (steel/concrete).
• Pre-employment checks (background, drug screen, MVR) may be required.

Responsibilities

• Execute complex structural analysis and prepare drawings for Hydropower/Hydraulic Structures (powerhouses, dams, spillways, penstocks).
• Perform site inspections and recommend remediation for aging infrastructure.
• Support dam safety evaluations under FERC Part 12d (risk analysis, structural stability).
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary design teams and manage communication.
• Supervise engineers and technicians in drawing packages, calculations, and specifications (US and overseas offices).
• Travel to client sites as needed, up to 20%.
• Assist with design fee estimates, budget/schedule tracking, and QA/QC requirements.
• Provide guidance on design standards, codes, and department procedures.
• Support continuous improvement and training within the group.

The Opportunity

Black & Veatch’s Structural Services Team is seeking an experienced, creative, and highly talented Structural Engineer to support Hydropower and Hydraulic Structures design projects. The candidate will function in the capacity of a staff‑level engineer.

The Team

Key Responsibilities

• Execute complex structural analysis, perform calculations, and prepare sketches and drawings for the design of Hydropower and Hydraulic Structures, including powerhouses, dams, spillways, penstocks, and other complex structural facilities.
• Perform site inspections of existing Hydropower and Hydraulic Structures projects and develop recommendations for remediation of aging infrastructure.
• Support Comprehensive Assessments of existing hydropower projects under the FERC Part 12d dam safety program including performing dam safety evaluations, risk analysis, and structural stability assessments.
• Collaborate with process and systems engineers in the execution of multi-disciplinary design projects, requiring communication and careful planning.
• Supervise Structural Engineers and Structural Technicians (both in the US and in overseas offices) in preparation of structural drawing packages, calculations, and specifications.
• Occasional travel to client sites during project development to collaborate with project stakeholders. Estimated travel is up to 20%.
• Support project administrative tasks, which may include any/all of the following: preparation of design fee estimates, monitoring progress against budget and schedule, management of project changes, and implementation of Black & Veatch Quality Control requirements.
• Provide guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies. Assist in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards. Provide technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines.
• Support continuous improvement efforts. Provide guidance and direction to others. Identify training needs for group and implements improvement strategies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master of Engineering or Master of Science from an ABET accredited Structural Engineering program.
• Familiarity with the latest editions of the International Building Code, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC Steel Construction Manual.
• Proficiency with use of structural analysis software such as RISA 3D, STAADPro, ANSYS or SAP 2000.
• Experience with Army Corps of Engineers projects and Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC).
• Proficiency with use of non-structural software packages such as MS Word, MS Excel, MathCAD, Bluebeam, ProjectWise, AutoCAD, and Revit.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science from an ABET accredited Structural or Civil Engineering program.
• Professional registration in at least one state with the ability to obtain additional licenses.
• Minimum 5 years of related structural design experience including steel structures and reinforced concrete.
