Job description

About the Role

Uber is launching AV Labs to accelerate the autonomous technology ecosystem. We're building out a high-velocity team of multi-disciplinary experts to turn real-world operations into high-quality data for our autonomous partners. This team is focused on the hardest problem in AV today: unlocking real-world, long-tail driving data. Autonomy is now a data race—and Uber has an edge: We collect rare, real-world driving data at a scale and capital efficiency no one else can match.

As a Staff Quality Engineer within our Hardware Engineering group, you will own the overall hardware system quality for our autonomous data collection vehicle platforms as they transition into mass production. You will be responsible for developing robust quality processes, bridging global supply chain operations, and proactively discovering and analyzing complex quality issues. Crucially, you will lead rapid containment strategies, drive rigorous testing procedures, and implement effective countermeasures to ensure seamless deployment.

What You Will Do
  • Own End-to-End Hardware Quality & Validation: Act as the strategic quality owner for complex autonomous data collection vehicle hardware subsystems. Spearhead the strategic planning and implementation of robust Test and Validation processes to support localized and global operations.
  • Bridge Global Supply Chains: Architect and maintain scalable quality management processes (APQP, PPAP, PFMEA) across internal manufacturing and complex, cross-border supplier networks. Optimize vendor synergies by bridging international technical innovation with North American operational excellence.
  • Lead Crisis Management & Rapid Containment: Serve as the primary leader for high-stakes failure investigations. Utilize advanced methodologies (8D, DMAIC) to drive rapid localized containment, orchestrate large-scale rework or recovery strategies, and mitigate financial and operational risks without waiting on global HQ support.
  • Oversee Rigorous Inspection and Diagnostics: Define comprehensive inspection criteria, acceptance test protocols (ATP), and environmental testing requirements. Establish a "fast-response" culture for critical diagnostics, utilizing both lab and vehicle-side tools (e.g., CAN diagnostics) to resolve field issues swiftly.
  • Champion Continuous Improvement & Technology Transfer: Collaborate tightly with internal engineering and external partners to implement corrective actions. Support complex technology migrations, and ensure all localized production lines meet Uber’s rigorous global benchmarks.
Basic Qualifications
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, coupled with 10+ years of hands-on experience in hardware quality, manufacturing, or reliability engineering.
  • Quality Methodologies: Deep expertise in automotive quality management systems and core tools, including APQP, PPAP, PFMEA/DFMEA, SPC, and MSA, alongside strong knowledge of industry standards (e.g., ISO 9001, IATF 16949).
  • Mass Production & Vendor Synergy: Proven track record of taking complex hardware systems from New Product Introduction (NPI) through high-volume mass production. Demonstrated ability to manage diverse global supply chains and lead cross-functional defect resolution (8D, RCCA).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Global Supply Chain Expertise: Deep expertise navigating global supply chain ecosystems and managing distributed teams to facilitate seamless cross-border technical collaboration and operational excellence.
  • Advanced Domain Expertise: Experience with complex autonomous sensor suites (LiDAR, Radar, Camera, Compute) and high-performance autonomous computing systems. Proven experience leading high-performing quality and testing teams to ensure rigorous validation of hardware platforms.
  • Advanced Certifications & Education: Master’s degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering or related discipline, alongside industry-recognized certifications such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or ASQ CQE.
  • Risk Mitigation Leadership: Demonstrated history of crisis leadership, mitigating massive recall risks, and orchestrating localized rework operations to save significant capital and ensure product integrity.
