Job summary

Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking a Full-Time Staff Psychologist within Counseling Services to provide direct clinical services to Health Sciences students. The role includes crisis intervention, diagnostic assessment, individual and group psychotherapy, triage, and outreach to support academic success and retention.

  • Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology is required and NY licensure eligibility.
  • Minimum of three years’ psychotherapy experience is required.
  • Experience with distressed patients or psychiatric inpatient units is required.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluation, diagnosis, short-term treatment, consultation, and referrals as needed.
  • Crisis intervention in urgent situations.
  • Triage evaluation via telephone for students requesting appointments.
  • Documentation of care in compliance with laws and best practices.
  • Outreach and education to students and campus community.
  • Participation in Quality Improvement activities.
  • After Hours telephone on-call rotation including weeknights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Team participation and leadership in meetings and projects.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

As a member of Counseling Services, the Full‑Time Staff Psychologist provides direct clinical services, including crisis intervention, diagnostic assessment, individual and group psychotherapy, triage assessment, and outreach, to a diverse population of Health Sciences students at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in support of academic success and retention.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluation, diagnosis, short‑term treatment, consultation, and referrals, if necessary.
  • Provision of crisis intervention in urgent situations.
  • Provision of triage evaluation via telephone contact with students who request appointments.
  • Provision of care in an interpersonally and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Documentation of care as prescribed by law and in accordance with best practices.
  • Outreach and education to students and the greater campus community.
  • Participation in Quality Improvement activities.
  • Participation in After Hours telephone on‑call rotation including weeknights, weekends and holidays.
  • Participation in academic inquiry and professional development according to identified interests and Counseling Services clinical issues.
  • Committee participation and leadership as well as participation in team meetings.
  • Clinical coordination and collaboration within Student Health on Haven.
  • Performance of a variety of other job‑related responsibilities as requested.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology is required. Candidates will possess licensure or be license‑eligible in the state of New York.
  • A minimum of three years’ psychotherapy experience is required. Computer literacy required, including Microsoft Office, familiarity with electronic scheduling systems, and electronic medical records highly desirable.
  • Evidence of experience working with distressed patients and/or on a psychiatric inpatient unit, or the functional equivalent, is required.
  • Demonstrated competence in crisis intervention, assessing need for psychiatric hospitalization, handling psychiatric emergencies, and supervising referral for inpatient care is required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in diagnosis, including mastery of diagnostic nomenclature, and in understanding best practices in diagnostic evaluations and time‑limited psychotherapy is required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in multicultural competency.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in urgent care coordination and high‑risk psychological evaluations.
  • Prior experience with and/or additional training in the psychological care of young adults with the following subspecialties: multicultural psychology, eating disorders, DBT, group therapy, campus outreach, and substance abuse.
  • Training and experience in short‑term models of treatment.
  • Prior experience working in a university mental health service or a comparable healthcare system.
