Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Project Engineer in Walnut Creek, CA to lead multi-discipline design efforts for Design-only and Design-Build/EPC projects. You will guide engineering disciplines, manage budgets, and coordinate with project controls and clients from both home office and field locations.

The role requires a BE degree from an ABET-accredited school and at least 3 years of detailed design experience.

Responsibilities

• Develop discipline man-hour budgets and WBS codes.
• Draft overall engineering man-hour budgets.
• Lead engineering field audits and onsite scope development.
• Perform independent quality and completeness reviews of engineering deliverables.
• Coordinate schedule, budget and progress with project controls teams.
• Identify and manage design changes and support client change processes.
• Direct field engineering services from home office and/or field locations.
• Prepare project cost estimates and subcontractor bid packages.
• Prepare turnover and start-up plans; ensure commissioning readiness.
• Ensure implementation of in-house and client specs in design/construction.
• Maintain action item lists and design RFI logs; lead design reviews.
• Publish meeting minutes and support monthly client status reports.
• Direct procurement of equipment, piping, instruments; monitor submittals.
• Direct vendor expediting and develop vendor quality oversight plans.
• Lead FAT planning and implementation; oversee safety compliance.
• Perform other duties and maintain policy adherence.

Description

The Staff Project Engineer will provide high level direction to all engineering disciplines throughout design efforts for Design-only and/or Design-Build/EPC projects. Design-only projects will encompass engineering design work for traditional design-bid-build projects. Design-Build/EPC projects will encompass all design, procurement and construction management activities.

Support proposal efforts with focus on engineering effort and activities.

• Develop discipline man-hour budgets and work breakdown structure (WBS) codes.


• Draft overall engineering man-hour budgets.


• Lead engineering field audits and onsite scope development.


• Perform independent quality and completeness reviews of engineering deliverables.


• Coordinate schedule, budget and progress measurement functions with project controls teams.


• Identify and manage design changes and support the client change process.


• Direct field engineering services from home office and/or field locations.


• Prepare project cost estimates.


• Prepare subcontractor bid and award packages and support subcontract plan development.


• Prepare turnover and start-up plans.


• Responsible for the implementation and use of in-house and client design and construction specifications.


• Maintain project action item lists and design RFI log.


• Lead internal and client design reviews.


• Direct internal progress, status and review meetings: publish meeting minutes.


• Support the development of monthly client status reports.


• Direct procurement process (equipment, piping, instruments, etc.)


• Monitor discipline progress with vendor submittals.


• Direct vendor expediting efforts.


• Develop vendor quality oversight plans.


• Lead and manage Factory Inspection Test planning and implementation.


• Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.


• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university and 3 years of detailed engineering design experience for design-only and/or EPC projects.


• Strong facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.


• Highly effective communicator with clear and concise writing and presentation skills.


• High level of attention to detail.


• Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).


• Ability to develop and manage workplans, schedules and budgets and provide leadership to a diverse project team a plus.


• Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.


• Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.

Compensation

$165,000.00-240,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
