Job summary

Veterinary Pharmaceutical Solutions seeks a licensed pharmacist to oversee the VPS Pharmacy operations, including compounding and dispensing of prescription medications for veterinary use. The role includes supervising compounding technicians, ensuring accurate dispensing, and maintaining regulatory compliance.

You will advise veterinarians on medications, manage inventory, and maintain compassionate customer service.

Job description

Position Summary

Responsible for the efficient, ethical, and lawful operation of VPS Pharmacy including the compounding and dispensing of prescription compounded medication. Responsible to supervise essential compounding duties in the pharmacy, including operating powder machine(s) and related computer system, operation of tablet and capsule grinding equipment, and other large non-sterile compounding equipment. Supervise the preparation of medications for the compounding process, and shipping/receiving of finished compounded prescriptions. Advise veterinarians and veterinary staff on the use and storage of prescription compounded medication. Order and maintain supply of pharmaceutical ingredients used in compounding. Supervise pharmacy compounding technicians as required by law.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Support the Pharmacist-in-Charge.

  • Support the management, oversight, and operation of all aspects of VPS Compounding Pharmacy.

  • Receive prescription requests from veterinarians or their agents efficiently and accurately in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Dispense compounded medications as prescribed.

  • Oversee and supervise accurate compounding, retrieving of finished goods, counting, pouring, weighing, mixing, packaging and/or labeling of compounded medication.

  • Provide medication consultation to veterinarians on compounded prescription medications regarding use, dosage, drug interactions/side effects, storage, etc. as required.

  • Accurately order, stock, maintain, and reconcile inventory in the pharmacy.

  • Review and validate prescriptions prior to dispensing. Validate amount (count, weight, or volume), quality, and physical condition and ensure all products are stored in appropriate areas.

  • Ensure all outdated/damaged products are handled per established VPS guidelines and procedures.

  • Maintain Pharmacy records including, but not limited to, patient profiles, pharmacy prescription records, inventories, master formulas, production records, etc.

  • Lead and oversee pharmacy technicians and ancillary support staff to ensure efficient and accurate operation of the Pharmacy.

  • Communicate any potential concerns or issues with the Pharmacist-in-Charge.

  • Ensure a clean and well-organized facility is maintained to comply with VPS standards.

  • Maintain and expand current knowledge of legal regulations, industry trends and best compounding pharmacy practices.

  • Make recommendations to improve current processes and to ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Comply with all applicable federal and state rules and regulations.

  • Maintain an active role in Quality Assurance.


Qualifications


  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Pharm. D. degree.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; strong customer service skills, Strong multi-tasking, organization, attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

  • Good leadership abilities with the capability to work in a hands-on environment.

  • Maintain pharmacist license(es) and complete required continuing education hours.


Work Environment/Physical Requirements


  • Required to lift and move up to 50 pounds frequently.

  • Required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Required to bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently.

  • Moderate to high noise level.
