Job summary

Coinbase is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer for the Identity Verification team. You will own the ML stack responsible for validating identities and detecting fraudulent activity across signups, account recovery, and high-risk actions.

You will lead architecture choices, mentor engineers, and collaborate with risk and security teams to deliver robust, scalable models that protect millions of accounts.

Qualifications

• 8+ years deploying production ML systems at scale.
• Domain experience in identity verification, biometrics, or account integrity with applied ML.
• Expert-level Python with production experience in TensorFlow or PyTorch, including model training, evaluation, and serving infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Own the full IDV ML stack, from feature pipeline through production enforcement.
• Build identity-graph systems using GNNs to detect synthetic identities and fraud at onboarding.
• Develop behavioral and device-intelligence models for real-time risk scoring and anomaly detection.
• Drive vendor ML strategy, benchmark external models, and design routing across providers/geographies.
• Lead and mentor senior/mid-level engineers and collaborate with ML Platform and Risk ML teams.
