Job summary

Planet Group is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to execute mechanical design and analysis for natural gas facilities and pipeline projects in Kansas City, MO. The role involves piping system design, equipment sizing, and development of P&IDs and isometrics.

You will coordinate with pipeline, civil/structural, electrical, and environmental teams, review vendor submittals, and support construction activities and proposals. Strong communication and ABET credentials are essential.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited degree with 3 years mechanical engineering experience.
• [FE with 3 years] or
• Master's degree with 2 years experience; consulting preferred.
• Working knowledge of ASME B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, API 520/521, CFR 49 Part 192.
• Experience with mechanical design software and engineering tools.
• Strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Engineers in Training (EIT) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Execute mechanical design and analysis for natural gas facilities and pipeline projects.
• Mechanical design of stations and facilities, including piping systems and material specs.
• Prepare calculations, studies and technical reports (pipe stress, relief, equipment sizing).
• Develop P&IDs, piping plans, isometrics, equipment layouts, and BOMs.
• Select and specify mechanical equipment (compressors, regulators, valves, meters, relief devices).
• Coordinate with Pipeline, Civil/Structural, Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls, Environmental.
• Review vendor submittals and bid evaluations.
• Support construction activities, RFIs, field visits, and as-built documentation.
• Assist in proposals, scopes of work, cost estimates, and schedules.
• Ensure compliance with ASME, API, and CFR requirements.
• Participate in client meetings and coordinate with owners, contractors, and vendors.
• Support process improvement, standard development, and quality control initiatives.
• Support Business Development and Marketing initiatives.

Staff Mechanical Engineer Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program, and 3 years of mechanical engineering experience required. Consulting preferred or
• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of mechanical engineering experience required. Consulting preferred or
• Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 2 years of mechanical engineering experience required. Consulting preferred.
• Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, such as ASME B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, API 520/521, and 49 CFR Part 192, is preferred.
• Experience with mechanical design software and engineering tools.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Staff Mechanical Engineer Description
