Job summary

Hackensack Meridian Health is seeking a Staff Interpreter to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps for non-English speaking patients. This role helps ensure accurate communication, delivery of health care, and support services.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, at least one year of interpreting experience, fluency in English and another language, plus medical terminology knowledge. Certification in medical interpreter training is required or preferred.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of one year of experience as an interpreter.
• Ability to speak English and another language fluently.
• In-depth knowledge of medical terminology; must pass a medical terminology course.
• Knowledge of cultural factors affecting communication between patient, families, providers and interpreter.

Responsibilities

• Bridge linguistic and cultural barriers to assure appropriate communication, delivery of health care and support services.
• Serve as liaison to language needs of non-English speaking community.
• Rotating schedule/shifts may include weekends and/or holidays based on needs.

The Staff Interpreter serves as a liaison to the language needs of the non-English speaking community by providing interpreting services. This role helps bridge linguistic and cultural barriers to assure appropriate communication, delivery of health care and support services.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

• High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
• Minimum of one year of experience as an interpreter.
• Ability to speak English and other language fluently.
• In depth knowledge of medical terminology, and successfully pass a medical terminology course.
• Knowledge and ability to articulate the cultural and perceptual factors that affect communication between patient, families, providers and interpreter.
• Demonstrate ability to relate to people in a warm and consistently friendly manner. Teamwork oriented, commitment to customer service excellence and collaborative approach required.
• Rotating schedule/shifts that may include weekends and/or holidays based on needs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

• Associate's or Bachelor's Degree.
• Certification or qualification in document translation.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

• Certification or qualification in medical interpreter training.
