Job summary

The Tucson Unified School District is seeking an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter to assist adult employees with disabilities, enabling communication with deaf and hard of hearing students, staff, and the community. This ADA accommodation-based role will end if the accommodated employee leaves or their needs change.

The position is located at Miles Exploratory Learning Center, Broadway & Highland, with a 0.9375 FTE (7.5 hours daily) and a 9.5 month work calendar.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher required.
  • NIC certification preferred (Advanced or Master).
  • Certificate of Interpretation or CSC preferred.
  • NAD certification levels 3–5 preferred.
  • EIPA score minimum 3.5 for interpreting proficiency.

Job description

Summary

Assists adult employees with disabilities by performing tasks that enable the employee to carry out the essential and/or marginal functions of his/her job. This position is based upon an American with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodation. This position and its associated funding will cease upon retirement, resignation, or termination of the individual for whom the accommodation was granted. Facilitates communication between deaf or hard of hearing employee and their hearing students, staff, community members and others through interpreting and transliterating – voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice.

Minimum Requirements
  • General Interpreter License issued by the Arizona Commission of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ACDHH)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation, Signed English, fingerspelling and/or other modes of communication with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students and adults
  • Familiarity with the deaf culture and cultural diversity
  • Verbal, signed, and written communication skills in English and a demonstrated ability to read and comprehend

Requirements Prior To Start Date
  • Proof of immunity to rubeola (measles) and rubella (German measles), or proof of MMR immunization
  • FBI fingerprint background check
  • Must hold a valid Driver's license (Arizona Driver’s License required within 30 days of hire) and personal vehicle insurance
  • coverage greater than or equal to the state required minimum for car insurance as described under Governing Board
  • Policy: EEB-R-1 Business and Personnel Transportation Services - Transportation by Employees
  • Reliable mode of personal transportation with evidence of auto insurance policy. Coverage must be valid throughout term of employment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Certified, Advanced, or Master
  • Certification of Transliteration
  • Certificate of InterpretationComprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC)
  • Valid Certificate from the National Associate of the Deaf (NAD) at level 3, 4 or 5
    • Proficiency of Interpreting skills through one of the following: Minimum score of 3.5 on Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA)
  • Basic knowledge of child development and language development.
  • Previous experience working with youth or adults in educational interpreting and/or tutoring.

LOCATION: Miles Exploratory Learning Center -Broadway & Highland Area

FTE : .9375 - 7.5 hours per day

Work Calendar: 9.5 month

This position is being created specifically to act as an ASL interpreter for one of our team members. Because the role exists solely to support this employee, the position will end if that employee leaves the District or if their needs change

Positions less than 30 hours per week are not eligible for district benefits.

Internal candidates will transfer at a rate commensurate with their bargaining unit language.
