Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Instrument & Controls Engineer in Kansas City to join design teams on aviation and federal projects. You will lead I&C activities, interface with clients, and deliver instrumentation data sheets, wiring and loop diagrams, and process control narratives across EPC and design-build projects.

The role requires a BS in engineering (ABET), 3 years of I&C experience, and proficiency with Revit/AutoCAD.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering from ABET accredited program.
Master of Science degree in above Engineering programs or related may be substituted for 1 year experience.
3 years of applicable engineering experience, consulting preferred.
FE or EIT completed; Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
Strong knowledge of electrical equipment design ANSI, NFPA, ISA, and IEEE Standards.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

Lead I&C engineering activities across all project phases, including planning, detailed design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
Interface with clients to define requirements, scope, and design expectations.
Prepare instrumentation design deliverables such as Instrument Index, Data Sheets, Installation Details, and Wiring/Loop diagrams.
Develop and review P&IDs in collaboration with process and mechanical teams.

Description

The Staff Instrument & Controls (I&C) Engineer will work on design teams to create world class designs for grassroots and revamp/brown field aviation and federal projects. The Staff I&C Engineer will work with the design team throughout the Engineering/Design, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) process, adapting I&C plans according to assigned budget, schedule, engineering/design standards, and client requirements. The Staff I&C Engineer will assist in providing deliverables for Front End Planning (FEP) and Detailed Design phases and support construction phase.

Ensure compliance with company, client, and site safety policies.

Lead I&C engineering activities across all project phases, including project planning, detailed design, procurement, construction, and commissioning, for both EPC and Design-Bid-Build projects.

Interface directly with clients to define requirements, scope, and design expectations.

Present technical solutions, studies, and design packages.

Prepare instrumentation engineering/design deliverables, including Instrument Index, Instrument Data Sheets, Instrument Installation Details, Instrument Location Plans, Wiring Diagrams, and Loop Diagrams.

Led the design and development of process control systems (DCS, PLC, or BAS).

Prepare controls design deliverables, including I/O list, Process Control Narratives, Graphic Sketches, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Alarm Rationalization, and manage third party control system suppliers to comply with the control system design requirements, including participating in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).

Prepare I&C purchase specifications, review bids, make technical recommendations and manage the overall purchase, review of I&C packages, and review of vendor documentation.

Support and coordinate the development of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) in collaboration with process and mechanical engineering teams.

Participate in process safety activities, including Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies and design reviews, and incorporate findings into control system design.

Specify process instrumentation such as temperature, pressure, flow, level, analyzers, notification devices, and control valves. Utilize knowledge of various technologies for selecting appropriate I&C application.

Perform preliminary sizing calculations for instruments such as orifice plates, controls valves, relief valves, and thermowells.

Develop level sketches in conjunction with multiple departments.

Responsible for applying knowledge of commonly used I&C engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the engineering services industry.

Provide leadership and guidance for less experienced engineers.

Responsible for compliance with company and project site safety policies.
