Job summary

Bain & Company in Chicago is seeking a Staff Engineer I to lead and contribute to AI-driven platform infrastructure. You will focus on building scalable cloud solutions, web applications, APIs, and automation that empower Bain employees using tools like Terraform, Kubernetes, and AI services.

You will mentor peers, collaborate across Platform Infrastructure and AI Tech, and uphold security, reliability, and best practices while delivering high-impact platforms for cloud and AI needs.

Qualifications

• 5-8+ years of Infrastructure Engineering experience in cloud platforms and automation.
• Experience with AWS, Azure or GCP and/or private datacenter management.
• Proficient in scripting and IaC: Python, Terraform, Helm, GitHub Actions, PowerShell, Ansible.
• Hands-on with CI/CD, code reviews, deployments, and pipelines.
• Familiar with logging/monitoring tools: Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus.
• Experience with identity solutions: Active Directory, AzureAD, Okta, LDAP.
• Knowledge of public cloud landing zones.
• Preferred experience with Agentic Coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Replit, v0).
• Knowledge of databases, data engineering, data science or BI tech.
• Go or Python for automation.

WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH

The Staff Engineer I will collaborate mostly with members of the AI Tech team, within the Platform Infrastructure group, using AI tooling (Claude Code, Claude.ai, Codex, OpenAI ChatGPT, Replit, v0, etc.) to deliver automated, self-service, and secure infrastructure and application solutions for all Bain employees.

The AI Tech team occasionally collaborates with internal consulting teams to help those teams support the work they are delivering to their clients. As part of the Platform Infrastructure, the team works closely with various groups, including Capabilities, Cloud Platform, Solutions Engineering, and Architecture, to build enterprise solutions across Bain.

WHERE YOU’LL FIT WITHIN THE TEAM

You will work as an individual contributor and technical leader within the AI Tech team. The tech team currently consists of four people, so we are looking for someone who can jump in to help and lead with the development of web applications, APIs, agents, MCPs, Terraform and other processes that automate the build of cloud and AI platforms.

You will work closely with two engineers to drive the development and execution of various platforms and services provided to all of Bain employees (AITech, CloudLaunch, Agentic Build Platform, Licensing Processes, etc.). While you will be working with AI tooling as a thought partner, having the experience and understanding of development/scripting languages is a plus. The platforms and processes you create will automate the build of and access to cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) and AI Platforms (Anthropic, OpenAI, Perplexity, Portkey, etc.). Having knowledge of at least one cloud platform is also a plus.

You must be adaptable, eager to learn, self-driven, and self-motivated. In addition to platform and solution delivery responsibilities, you will also play a key role in identifying areas for continuous improvement and implementing best practices.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Platform & Solution Delivery (60%)

• Help design, lead building and maintaining public and private infrastructure and solutions to support the availability, orchestration, configuration, maintenance and monitoring of infrastructure environments
• Develop blueprints or engineer new solutions as requirements dictate
• Make security a priority at every step of the infrastructure, application and product lifecycle
• Supervise code changes or major changes
• Mentor and coach junior team members
• Help define and advocate for effective development practices
• Lead identifying issues with efficiency, stability, availability, and security of existing code and infrastructure, and bring new ideas to the table to improve overall delivery of services
• Help to establish, implement and adhere to the corporate technology standards and guidelines

ABOUT YOU

Experience

5-8+ years of Infrastructure Engineering experience that includes:

• Multiple cloud providers (AWS, Azure or GCP) or private datacenter management, familiar with other providers
• Scripting, infrastructure as code and automation languages and tools (Python, Terraform, Helm, GitHub Actions, PowerShell and Ansible)
• CI/CD processes, code reviews, code deployments and pipelines
• Logging and monitoring solutions such as Datadog, Grafana and Prometheus
• Identity solutions such as Active Directory, AzureAD, Okta or LDAP
• Public cloud landing zone architectures

Preferred experience with

• Agentic Coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Replit, or v0, etc.)
• Databases, data engineering, data science or business intelligence technology
• Go or Python for cloud platform and infrastructure API automation
• Hashicorp Cloud Platform (Terraform & Vault)
• Containers, Docker and Kubernetes

Education

• Associate's/Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

U.S. COMPENSATION INFORMATION

Compensation for this role includes base salary, annual discretionary performance bonus, 401(k) plan with an annual employer contribution based on years of service and Bain’s best in class benefits package (details listed below).

Some local governments in the United States require a good-faith, reasonable salary range to be included in job postings for open roles.

The estimated annualized compensation for this role is as follows:

• In Massachusetts, the good-faith, reasonable annualized full-time salary range for this role is between $147,250 - $176,750
• In Illinois, the good-faith, reasonable annualized full-time salary range for this role is between $141,000 - $169,250
• Annual discretionary performance bonus
• 4.5% 401(k) company contribution, which increases after 3 years of service and is 100% vested upon start date
• This role may also be eligible for other elements of discretionary compensation
