Job summary

Google's Android XR hardware team in San Jose is seeking a Staff Hardware Reliability Engineer to own the reliability of complex sub-systems and BOM lifecycle from design to field analysis.

You will lead cross-functional hardware design efforts, set test parameters for rigid/flex PCBs, and drive lifecycle management of electrical, mechanical and electro-mechanical components, ensuring performance and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Physics or related field.
  • 6 years of experience in a hardware reliability environment.
  • 3 years of experience in technical leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Identify flaws and issues with hardware components, drive corrective solutions for complex hardware failures.
  • Evaluate hardware design feasibility based on requirements and trade-offs; help develop the roadmap with partners and vendors.
  • Lead and approve activities in hardware design/architecture for high-complexity products, predicting consequences of design decisions in cross-functional trade-offs.
  • Balance hardware performance against power, cost and cross-functional considerations; meet product specs and regulatory requirements.
  • Explain design decisions to external customers and partners as needed.

In this role, you will act as the critical bridge between our System Architecture, design, engineering and manufacturing partners. In this lead Reliability engineering role, you will dictate component selection for complex sub-systems, rigid and flex PCBs, design the physical reliability test parameters, and plan reliability from start to shipping and early field failure analysis. You will drive the lifecycle of every electrical, mechanical and electro-mechanical component on the bill of materials (BOM) and predict potential field return symptoms and field failure analysis.

US: $188000 - $274000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities
  • Identify flaws and issues with hardware components. Solve and analyze key issues, risks, or trade-offs, and address complex hardware failures by driving corrective solutions.
  • Evaluate hardware design feasibility based on product requirements. Identify and customize the design solution based on trade-offs in packaging, performance, power or technology selection, and scope hardware project. Help develop the roadmap in collaboration with internal partners/external vendors.
  • Lead and approve activities in a discipline of hardware design, architecture, technology, or development for a product or system of high complexity. Demonstrate a track record of accurately predicting consequences of hardware design decisions in cross-functional trade-off discussions.
  • Balance hardware performance priorities against power, cost, and cross-functional considerations. Be responsible for meeting hardware product performance and regulatory specifications, if applicable.
  • Explain design decisions to external business customers and industry partners, as needed.
