Job summary

Actalent is seeking a Staff Engineer (Geotechnical) to join our engineering consulting team in Cedar Rapids, IA. This role blends field and office work, with hands-on site investigations, laboratory testing, and technical report preparation. Early-career engineers will gain project management experience and work toward PE licensure.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil/geotechnical/construction/materials engineering or related field.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Experience with field testing, materials testing, or geotechnical investigations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team; willingness to travel up to 25%.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or licensure progress is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Perform field and laboratory testing related to geotechnical engineering and construction materials.
• Conduct site observations and monitor construction activities for compliance with project specs.
• Collect, document and analyze field data and testing results.
• Prepare geotechnical reports, recommendations and technical documentation.
• Develop engineering solutions and provide project recommendations to senior engineers.
• Prepare proposals and cost estimates for investigations and materials testing.
• Manage small geotechnical and materials testing projects from start to finish.
• Maintain communication with clients and support ongoing relationships.
• Collaborate with project teams on larger projects and assist with professional development toward PE licensure.
