Hillis-Carnes Engineering Associates in Pittsburgh is seeking an entry-level Staff Engineer to support geotechnical and construction materials testing projects. You will collaborate with experienced teams on field tests, soil classification, and lab analyses, with opportunities to advance and take on leadership tasks.

The role requires a Civil Engineering degree (B.S. or M.S.), a valid driver's license, and flexibility to work nights, weekends, and travel as needed.

Qualifications

• BS and/or MS in Civil Engineering or closely related field.
• Entry level position; no prior professional work experience required.
• Valid driver’s license with reliable vehicle.
• Ability to meet pre-employment requirements.
• Ability to (occasionally) work nights, weekends, and travel overnight.
• Move up to 60–80 pounds (soil/concrete samples, nuclear gauges).
• Ability to read engineering and construction plans/specifications.
• Preferred: Engineer in Training (EIT) license.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with geotechnical and construction materials testing/inspections teams on projects for public and private sector clients.
• Perform field tests such as test borings/test pits and other geotechnical activities.
• Conduct soil classification, laboratory analysis, and prepare geotechnical reports/calculations.
• Manage field staff and review daily CMT field reports.
• Occasionally perform on-site construction materials testing services.

As a Staff Engineer in our Pittsburgh office, you will work collaboratively with our knowledgeable geotechnical and construction materials testing/inspections departments and assist with a wide variety of projects for public and private sector clients. Some duties may include but not limited to; test boring/test pit observations, other geotechnical field tests, soil classification, laboratory analysis, preparation of geotechnical reports/calculation, management of field staff, review of daily CMT field reports, occasional performance of on-site construction materials testing services, etc.
