Job description

STAFF LEVEL ENVIRONMENTAL GEOLOGISTS, SCIENTISTS, & ENGINEERS (TORRANCE, CA)

Genesis Engineering & Redevelopment, Inc. (GE&R) is an environmental consulting firm that provides a broad range of environmental services that include initial site evaluation and human health risk assessments, site investigation, remediation, and regulatory case closure, litigation support, and expert witness services. We have an immediate opening in our Torrance, California office for a Staff Level professional, specifically geologists, environmental scientists, and engineers with 0-3 years of experience.

We are a small and growing company with an employee and family focus. Because of our size, even entry level staff have open access to senior management. The company is designed to provide strong scientific services to our clients, with several Ph.D. hydrogeologists on staff. Our size also means that employees won’t be pigeonholed as all staff must fill a variety of roles in the company.

This is an on-site position with approximately 60% of your time spent in the field at our client’s facilities and 40% of your time spent in the office. Each Staff member is assigned as the lead on several projects and is the primary person responsible for field data collection, data analysis and interpretation, and preparing first drafts of reports and other project documents.

Responsibilities
  1. Preparing work plans to investigate the type and distribution of contaminants in the subsurface.
  2. Performing lithologic logging of boreholes to determine the distribution of geologic materials in the subsurface.
  3. Collecting soil, soil vapor, indoor air, and groundwater samples to determine contaminant concentrations and trends through time.
  4. Creating geologic cross sections to visualize the geologic units and pathways for contaminant migration.
  5. Preparing contour maps of the water table elevation and determining horizontal and vertical hydraulic gradients to understand and quantify the movement of water through the subsurface.
  6. Preparing 2D and 3D contour maps of the contaminant concentrations in soil, soil vapor, and groundwater to understand the fate and transport of contaminants.
  7. Evaluating the subsurface geochemical conditions to understand the chemical reactions that control the movement of contaminants.
  8. Preparing technical reports that present interpretations of the data collected and provide recommendations for additional investigation or remediation of contaminants.
  9. Developing conceptual models of the physical and chemical processes that control the movement of contaminants to design strategies to immobilize or destroy the contaminants.
  10. Assessing the pathways in which humans are exposed to contaminants to evaluate exposure risk.

Compensation includes an outstanding health care package, bonuses, paid vacation, medical leave, a 401k retirement plan, and continuing education support. This position has the potential for growth as your skills and abilities warrant. We provide extensive training and mentoring, and our performance evaluation process focuses on professional growth.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. B.S. or M.S. in Geology/Hydrogeology, Environmental Sciences, and Civil, or Environmental Engineering
  2. Experience with soil and groundwater investigation and remediation projects
  3. Field experience, including drilling and sampling
  4. Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  5. Computer skills including MS Word and Excel
  6. Professional work and scientific ethics
  7. Ability to travel overnight periodically to project sites
  8. Ability to work well in a team as well as independently
