Staff Geological Engineer or Engineering Geologist

Location: Seattle, WA | Type: Full Time | Department: Natural Resources Group

As a Staff Geological Engineer or Engineering Geologist, you will support engineering geology projects with an emphasis on geological characterization, field mapping, subsurface exploration, and rock slope stability evaluations. You can expect to spend a significant portion of your time in the field observing explorations, mapping geologic conditions, documenting earthwork and foundation construction, and collecting field data that informs engineering analyses and design recommendations. You’ll also assist with report preparation, figures, technical calculations, and geotechnical analyses, such as slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, deep foundation design, seismic evaluation, and numerical modeling. This position may also provide support to our engineering geology or geotechnical teams in other locations as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs geotechnical engineering activities with an emphasis on geological characterization of sites, field mapping, and rock slope stability analysis.
• Responsible for field explorations, field mapping, earthwork, foundation construction, and construction projects to help ensure work is completed consistent with project plans, specifications, and safety guidelines.
• Responsible for preparing detailed and accurate field reports; assists with coordinating field exploration and mapping programs; gathers field data and samples; and coordinates samples for testing as needed.
• Performs geotechnical analyses and calculations including slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, deep foundation design, seismic evaluation, and related analyses using tools such as MathCAD, GeoStudio Suite, RocScience Suite, PLAXIS, and FLAC.
• Develops moderately complex conceptual models under the supervision of a licensed engineer and completes complex numerical modeling analyses as assigned.
• Prepares deliverables such as technical reports, memos, figures, tables, and charts; completes portions of technical reports; and provides occasional quality assurance/quality control support.
• Supports project management tasks, including budget planning, general field report reviews, proposal development, and timely delivery of assigned work to the project manager within estimated scope and schedule.
• Assists with permit applications in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering Geology or Civil, Geological, Geotechnical, or Mining Engineering required; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
• Previous internship or experience in geotechnical engineering preferred.
• Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Geologist-In-Training (GIT) certification.
• Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and successfully work within a team.
• Proven problem solving, and professional-level verbal and written communication skills are a must.
• A valid driver’s license is required.
• One year of driving experience in the United States. Consideration will be provided for international driving experience.
• Desire and willingness to travel up to 25% of the time.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

• Ability to perform a wide range of physical activities and do heavy work including exerting up to 50 pounds of force on occasion.
• Ability to perform consistent work on a PC with prolonged sitting and view of a monitor/screen.
• Ability to travel for short-term and long-term assignments as needed.

This also includes wearing appropriate safety equipment when working in the field and completing all required health & safety training prior to beginning field work.

Our best estimate of the salary range for Staff Geological Engineer, located in Bellingham or Tacoma, WA or Portland, OR is $71,000 – 96,000 annually. Our best estimate of the salary range for Staff Geological Engineer, located in Spokane, WA is $67,000 – 91,000 annually. Our best estimate of the salary range for Staff Engineering Geologist, located in Redmond or Seattle, WA is $63,000 – 85,000 annually. Our best estimate of the salary range for Staff Engineering Geologist, located in Bellingham or Tacoma, WA or Portland, OR is $61,000 – 83,000 annually. Our best estimate of the salary range for Staff Engineering Geologist, located in Spokane, WA is $58,000 – 78,000 annually. Compensation offered will be based on a variety of individual factors, including education and experience, as well as internal equity. GeoEngineers’ salary ranges are reviewed and updated each year and employees are eligible for pay increases based on individual performance. As part of our competitive total rewards package, employees in this role may also be eligible for our annual year-end bonus offering, subject to program eligibility requirements.
