Job description

Renesas is a global semiconductor company delivering innovative embedded processing, analog, power, and connectivity solutions. This role supports advanced power management products for demanding compute, AI, datacenter, and infrastructure applications.

Job Description

Renesas is seeking an experienced Staff Firmware/Middleware Engineer to define firmware architecture, control interfaces, telemetry systems, and diagnostic frameworks for next-generation digital power management products used in AI, datacenter, and high-performance computing applications.

This role works at the intersection of embedded firmware, control systems, semiconductor hardware, validation, and system architecture. The successful candidate will help define scalable firmware frameworks that enable advanced power management, monitoring, characterization, tuning, diagnostics, and system optimization features across multiple product families.

This is an architecture-focused role that partners closely with firmware development teams. It is ideal for someone who can prototype quickly, understand implementation tradeoffs, and define clean firmware-facing contracts for complex mixed-signal control systems.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

  • Shape reusable firmware architecture for advanced digital power products.
  • Connect hardware capability, firmware behavior, system observability, and validation needs early in the product lifecycle.
  • Help teams move faster by replacing one-off firmware hooks with scalable, documented architecture patterns.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Define firmware architecture requirements for digital multiphase power controllers and related power management products.
  • Develop system-facing firmware interfaces for telemetry, monitoring, diagnostics, tuning, characterization, and control-loop support.
  • Translate system architecture needs into clean firmware contracts, data structures, APIs, timing expectations, and execution flows.
  • Collaborate with systems, firmware, digital design, analog design, verification, validation, applications, and software/tool teams.
  • Support embedded characterization methods such as signal injection, frequency-response measurement, fixed-point signal processing, runtime monitoring, and health-oriented diagnostics.
  • Create reference implementations or early prototypes when needed to reduce architectural risk and validate implementation feasibility.
  • Document firmware architecture specifications, interface behavior, operating ranges, limits, timing requirements, and validation expectations.
  • Help establish reusable firmware patterns across product families while leaving production firmware delivery ownership with the firmware implementation team.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience in embedded firmware, embedded systems, digital power, SoC firmware, control-oriented firmware, or related semiconductor product development.
  • Strong C programming experience for resource-constrained embedded systems.
  • Experience with microcontrollers, embedded peripherals, interrupts, timers, fixed-point math, register interfaces, and hardware bring-up.
  • Ability to translate system-level requirements into firmware APIs, data structures, execution flows, and testable contracts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document architecture clearly for multiple execution teams.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with digital power controllers, DC/DC converters, voltage regulators, telemetry, diagnostics, or firmware-enabled power management products.
  • Experience with frequency-response measurement, Bode-style characterization, embedded auto-tuning, or signal-processing techniques.
  • Experience with Python, automation, data analysis, firmware test infrastructure, or model-based development workflows.
  • Familiarity with Verilog, SystemVerilog, hardware modeling, or hardware/software interface definition.
  • Experience working across firmware, hardware, validation, software tools, applications, and systems engineering teams.
