Job description

A Staff Scientist at H2M architects + engineers works alongside experienced scientists and engineers in the remediation, industrial hygiene, and forensics fields to grow your knowledge through onsite fieldwork performing sampling, testing and inspections for asbestos surveys, reviewing and understanding site plans, completing asbestos, mold, lead and indoor air quality inspection reports for insurance companies, private industries and school districts. This role is offered at two levels: Staff Scientist 1 (0 to 2 years) and Staff Scientist 2 (2 to 5 years), reflecting increasing independence, technical responsibility, and decision-making authority.

H2M's Industrial Hygiene and Environmental teams help clients identify, evaluate, and manage environmental and occupational health hazards. We assess asbestos, chemicals, lead, mold, and other contaminants, transform brownfields into usable spaces to support regulatory compliance, and improve indoor air quality and safeguard groundwater. Our scientists and technicians deliver practical solutions that promote safe and healthy environments and enhance quality of life.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform asbestosand/or moldsurveys on residential and commercial buildings.
• Provide asbestos project monitoring and air sampling, including compliance with on-site field protocols such as chain of custody forms and daily logs.
• Analysis tabulation, analysis review/ evaluation, and report writing.
• Assistance with lead andotherindoor air quality testing.
• Follow clear instructions and communicate project updates and/or relevant information with the project team and with clientsprofessionally.
• Other duties as assigned.

Other Responsibilities may include:

• Perform soil and groundwater sampling.
• Coordinate and oversee soil borings and monitoring well installation.
• Provide remediation oversight.
• Assist in data management, evaluation, and preparation of technical reports.

Education & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required with a focus in Environmental Science or related discipline desired.
• 0 to 5 years of experience in the environmental consulting field, specifically industrial hygiene.

  • Staff Scientist 2: 2 to 5 years of experience.

• The following current certifications are preferred and will be taken into consideration in conjunction with relevant professional experience:

• Asbestos Certifications (NYS DOL): Asbestos Inspector, Asbestos Air Sampling Technician, Asbestos Project Monitor, and Asbestos Project Designer
• Asbestos Certifications (NYC DEP): Asbestos Investigator
• Mold Certifications (NYS DOL): Mold Assessor
• Lead Certifications (USEPA): Lead-Based Paint Inspector, Lead-Based Paint Risk Assessor
• IICRC certifications a plus

• Prior experiencedealing with contractors and ensuring compliance with state and city agencies, a plus.
• Strong technical skills including field expertise and knowledge of architectural drawings.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Additional Requirements

• As part of your role, you may be required to work in environments where the use of a respirator is necessary. In such cases, H2M will provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure compliance with all applicable safety and health regulations. Therefore, you will be required to participate in any necessary respirator fit testing, training, and medical evaluations in accordance with OSHA standards and company policy.
• This role requires some travel. Business-related travel may involve visits to project sites, client locations, and other H2M offices and may require the use of a personal vehicle.
• This is an exempt, salaried role that may occasionally require flexibility outside standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and select holidays, to support project schedules, client needs, and business priorities.

The salary range for this role is $61,000 to $82,400 annually.

• Staff Scientist 1: $61,000 to $74,800 annually.
• Staff Scientist 2: $66,600 to $82,400 annually.
