Job summary

Shield AI is seeking an experienced mechanical design engineer to own the design of motors and associated electro-mechanical sub-systems for X-BAT and other aircraft. You will create detailed 3D models and drawings, and collaborate closely with manufacturing and the aircraft integration teams.

You will test and qualify components on engines and dynos, perform NVH testing, and ensure designs meet manufacturing tolerances and performance targets.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in mechanical design of electric motors.
• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
• Strong fundamentals in materials, mechanics, dynamics, thermal, DFM and tolerancing.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling.
• Experience with GD&T, stack-up analyses, and realistic tolerancing for manufacturing.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver motor products from design through production.
• Hands-on verification of performance and integration with power electronics.
• Experience testing for noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).
• Proven team player with high standards and integrity.

• Own the design of motors and other electric machines for X-BAT and other next gen aircraft
• Design sub-systems and components including wound field motor, permanent magnet motor, and motor mechanical structural components
• Integrate designs with the aircraft structure, engine, power electronics, and thermal system
• Create detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings of electro-mechanical designs at a component and motor sub-system level
• Release detailed work instructions and documentation in close collaboration with manufacturing
• Execute hands on testing and full qualification on a representative dyno, engine test stand, and full aircraft
• Perform noise and vibration testing on components for motors and power electronics, including vehicle powertrain and thermal systems
• 5+ years of experience in mechanical design of electric motors
• Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
• Strong technical fundamentals with material selection, mechanics, dynamics, thermal, DFM, and tolerancing
• Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling
• Experience with GD&T, stack-up analyses (linear & radial), and determining realistic tolerancing limits based on manufacturing best practices
• Have delivered motor products from design through production
• Hands on experience to verify performance and integrate with power electronics
• Experience testing for noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH)
• Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting
• You have a demonstrated record of working hard, being a trustworthy teammate, holding yourself and others to high standards, and being kind to others
