Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking a Staff Engineer – Electrical/VSD SME to lead cross-functional teams globally, focusing on electrical systems and VSD designs for data center chillers and mission-critical applications. You will guide resolution of complex issues with extensive product knowledge and collaboration across functions.

The role requires strong leadership, engineering excellence, and the ability to travel up to 15% domestically and internationally to support global projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with 8–10 years of related work experience in HVAC equipment or similar Data Center applications.
• Ability to lead an execution team and coordinate Johnson Controls resources.
• Strong communication with internal/external customers and senior management.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite Applications.
• Six Sigma skills and experience with manufacturing systems.
• Willingness to travel up to 15% domestically and internationally.
• Fluent/functional English; Spanish and/or Chinese a plus.

What will you do:

• The Staff Engineer – Electrical/VSD SME is proactive in leading and/or participating on multi-functional teams (manufacturing, design, quality, supply chain) with team members located in different regions, globally, to drive continuous improvement of products and processes for electrical systems and Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) on chiller products used in Data Center and Mission Critical applications.
• As an authority, you will help guide the teams technically to resolve complex product design and application issues based on years of product experience, education and training.
• The candidate will have extensive knowledge of electrical systems and VSD designs with a focus on chiller applications.

How you will do it:

• Communicates at the appropriate technical level to resolve issues for Product Technical Support, Field Technicians and customers.
• Participates on product development teams with emphasis on DFMEA’s, SFMEA’s design reviews, reliability test plans, design for manufacturing and helping to coordinate and follow up on field testing.
• Works with the Technical Communications Group, is responsible for the technical content of service literature which includes Installation and Operations Manuals, Service Manuals, Service Information letters, and Service Bulletins for electrical systems and VSDs used on chiller products.
• Also, responsible for providing input for the technical content of training materials.
• Communicates with design, manufacturing, and service groups globally sharing lessons learned and best practices to prevent issues from arising on new products being introduced into the marketplace and improve product quality and cost.
• Participates on Warranty Teams to stay abreast of field issues and participate with multi-disciplined teams to find root cause and corrective actions for resolution of these issues.
• Must be proactive, stepping in to take the lead, coordinating and directing actions, to resolve issues as the situation may require.
• Works with Engineering team to test programs to validate potential methods of reducing human intervention for service and maintenance of chillers and their components.
• Work closely with the chiller product teams in generating service enabling product enhancements that consider the best balance of cost, performance, and reliability.
• Works closely with the Product Teams on Chiller Retrofit offerings and finding ways to move from time-based maintenance recommendations to proactive condition-based recommendations.
• Utilize warranty returns as a source of content from component tear downs, to troubleshooting content for knowledge exchange.
• Assists in Root Cause Analysis (RCAs) to drive corrective field actions and reduce future failures.

What we look for:

• Required Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 8-10 years of related work experience, or minimum of 15 years related work experience in HVAC equipment or a similar field supporting Data Centers or other Mission Critical Applications
• Demonstrated ability to lead an execution team successfully, including the coordination of other Johnson Controls resources
• Interpersonal skills to effectively connect with both internal and external customers
• Effectively communicates project progress, issues, financial status and customer satisfaction to senior management as required
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Good organizational skills with attention to detail
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite Applications
• Demonstrated ability to simultaneously lead a large and diverse number of projects with professionalism, cooperation, and persistence
• Able to travel both Domestic and International up to 15%
• Preferred Graduate degree
• Experience accessing and using manufacturing systems
• Six Sigma skills
• Ability to speak Spanish and/or Chinese

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $115,000.00 – 150,000.00 USD Annual.

Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
