Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Columbus, OH is seeking a Staff Electrical Engineer to lead electrical design across power, process, healthcare, and industrial projects from concept through design completion.

You will modify drawings, review CAD outputs, and apply engineering codes and standards while coordinating with project managers and field staff on budgets and client needs.

The role emphasizes accuracy, collaboration, and hands-on design work in a dynamic, ESOP-enabled team environment.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited BS in Electrical Engineering with 3 years of electrical engineering experience; consulting preferred.
• ABET-accredited BS in Electrical or related Engineering Technology with FE exam and 3 years of electrical engineering experience; consulting preferred.
• MS in Electrical Engineering with 2 years of electrical engineering experience; consulting preferred.
• Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in AutoCAD, MicroStation, 2D and 3D rendering programs; other analysis tools.

Responsibilities

• Perform electrical design of projects from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Modify and review production drawings for diverse facilities (power plants, industrial, healthcare, airports, etc.).
• Design electrical components per project manager requirements.
• Apply knowledge of electrical engineering concepts, codes, and procedures.
• Research and compile project data for managers.
• Update CAD drawings and verify corrections across CAD software.
• Prepare information for client presentations, shop drawing reviews, and contract administration.
• Conduct field inspections, measurements or calculations for clients.
• Comply with all policies and standards.

Description

The Staff Electrical Engineer will work on project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of projects including power, process, corporate, healthcare, pipeline airports, institutional, industrial, manufacturing, government and military facilities. The Staff Electrical Engineer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting electrical plans according to budget constraints, design factors or client needs.

• Perform electrical design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.

• Modify and review production drawings for a variety of projects including, but not limited to: power plants, process facilities, industrial facilities, healthcare facilities, airports, educational institutions, commercial, and governmental and military facilities.

• Design electrical components for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers.

• Applies strong knowledge of commonly used electrical engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the electrical engineering services industry.

• Research and compile project related data as required by the project managers.

• Update drawings provided by senior engineers to verify corrections are made within multiple CAD related software.

• Compiles information for client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration for the design of power, process, pipeline, industrial, healthcare, airports, educational institutions, commercial, and governmental and military facilities.

• Performs field inspections, measurements or calculations for public and private clients.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program. and 3 years of electrical engineering experience required, consulting preferred.

• Bachelor Degree in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 3 years of electrical engineering experience required, consulting preferred.

• Master Degree in Electrical Engineering and 2 years of electrical engineering experience required, consulting preferred.

• Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.

• Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

• Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).

• Strong computer skills include AutoCAD, MicroStation, 2D and 3D rendering programs and other analysis programs.

• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

• Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.
