Job summary

Rivian is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to own the HV Battery and BMS architecture, delivering robust design across prototype and production packs. You will define bus topology, protection schemes, and sensing chains while ensuring EMI/EMC compliance and safety in collaboration with controls, systems, and test teams.

The role requires hands-on lab work, DFMEA inputs, and close alignment with product and supplier teams to translate learnings into reliable future packs.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years in Battery, Automotive, Aerospace, or related industries.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong fundamentals in analog and mixed-signal design for HV batteries: sensing chains; signal conditioning; ADC considerations; noise/accuracy trade-offs.
  • Working knowledge of BMS architectures: cell/pack monitoring ICs; isolation; centralised or distributed topologies.
  • Experience with communication paths (wired/wireless) between cell monitoring components and master controllers.

Responsibilities

  • Own key parts of the HV Battery and BMS electrical architecture.
  • Lead design and development of the HV Battery and BMS architecture across prototype and production‑intent packs, from proof of concept through analysis/simulation and validation.
  • Define and refine HV battery/bms elements: bus topology, protection, contactors/fuses, sensing chains, isolation, and controls/diagnostics.
  • Analyze and optimize HV bus behavior to control ripple, EMI/EMC, and robust operation.
  • Collaborate with controls engineers to ensure correct signals, limits, and safety for prototyping and production algorithms.
  • Plan and execute evaluations of HV Battery/BMS items on prototype hardware; summarize results and recommendations.

Job description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. We build emissions‑free electric adventure vehicles and seek curious, courageous souls who love the outdoors and want to protect it for future generations. Innovation is core to our culture – we challenge what’s possible, reframe problems, and explore unknown areas.

Responsibilities
  • Own key parts of the HV Battery and BMS electrical architecture.
  • Lead design and development of the HV Battery and BMS electrical architecture across prototype and production‑intent packs, from proof of concept and requirements through analysis/simulation and validation.
  • Define and refine key HV Battery/BMS elements: bus topology and protection, contactors/fuses/current sensors, precharge and HV protection schemes, sensing chains and isolation, and hooks needed for controls and diagnostics.
  • Analyze and optimize HV bus behavior (capacitance, inductance, resistance) to control ripple, manage EMI/EMC, and ensure robust operation across operating modes and variants.
  • Work with controls engineers to ensure the battery pack has the right signals, limits, and safety strategies for both prototyping and production algorithms.
  • Plan and execute evaluations of HV Battery/BMS electrical roadmap items on prototype hardware, summarize results and recommendations.
  • Convert prototype and field learnings into requirements, diagnostics concepts, DFMEA inputs, and design guidelines for the HV bus, HV components, and BMS sensing/controls.
  • Partner with Systems, Functional Safety, and Product Excellence teams to close the loop on high‑risk failure modes, driving design‑side preventive changes into future packs and architectures.
  • Own or support bench and pack‑level experiments for key HV Battery/BMS functions (e.g., precharge and contactor schemes, HV measurement and isolation behavior, wireless BMS/RF robustness).
  • Work closely with Test and Validation, Mechanical Engineering, and supplier teams to debug test issues and clearly separate hardware, software, and setup problems.
Qualifications
  • 7+ years of work experience in Battery, Automotive, Aerospace, or related industries.
  • At least a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong fundamentals in analog and mixed‑signal design for HV batteries: voltage, current, and temperature sensing chains; signal conditioning; ADC considerations; noise and accuracy trade‑offs.
  • Working knowledge of BMS architectures: cell monitoring ICs, pack monitoring ICs, isolation, centralized or distributed topologies.
  • Experience with communication paths (wired and wireless) between cell monitoring components and master controllers.
  • Practical experience with schematic capture and PCB design, including HV and LV circuits.
  • Hands‑on experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, loads) and hardware debug/root‑cause analysis in embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with requirements and issue tracking tools such as Jama/Flow or Jira.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, clear design and test documentation, and ability to lead or contribute to design reviews and cross‑functional discussions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in ambiguous, fast‑moving environments while collaborating across SW, Systems, ME, Test, and suppliers.
