Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
  • Experience with electromechanical or electromagnetic assemblies and high/medium-voltage equipment.
  • Knowledge of IEEE/IEC standards for high-voltage testing.
  • Ability to design tests, define objectives, instrumentation requirements and data analysis methods, and to interpret results.
  • Proficiency with Python, MATLAB, Minitab or comparable tools for data analysis and automation.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to lead projects under tight deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Drive electrical testing and analyze results to support design decisions and product roadmaps.
  • Lead engineering projects and subsystems within larger initiatives; align across teams and stakeholders.
  • Develop new products from concept through prototyping and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Mentor lower-level engineers and provide technical guidance.
  • Collaborate across Insulation Technology, Vacuum Interrupter, Electronics, and Advanced-Mfg teams to optimize designs for production.
  • Drive basic and applied research to advance technology concepts aligned with business objectives.

Compensation

At S&C, we are dedicated to providing competitive and equitable compensation for all our team members, and we are committed to transparency in our pay practices. The estimated annual base salary range for this position is $116,534 – $154,413.38. Individual pay within this salary range is determined by several compensable factors, including performance, knowledge, job‑related skills and experience, and relevant education or training. This role is also eligible for S&C’s annual incentive plan (AIP), subject to eligibility criteria.

Key Responsibilities
Research and Technology
  • Drive electrical testing and analyze results from independent research and research from lower‑level engineers. Document findings and report insights to support design decisions to further product roadmaps. Attend conferences and stay current with industry trends. Identify opportunities to apply emerging technologies and practices to advance departmental capabilities and product innovation.
Project Leadership
  • Lead engineering projects and electrical subsystems within larger initiatives. Drive technical execution, ensure alignment across teams, and support successful delivery. Communicate with internal and external stakeholders, establishing objectives and expectations.
New Product Design
  • Demonstrate deep expertise in electrical and power systems, including electromagnetic actuation and relay design. Apply advanced knowledge to solve complex problems and drive design improvements and the development of new products, ensuring manufacturability, performance, and cost‑effectiveness. Oversee the process from concept through prototyping and technology transfer while collaborating with cross‑functional teams to integrate electrical solutions seamlessly.
Technical Mentorship
  • Coach and mentor lower‑level engineers. Provide technical guidance, assign tasks, and support professional growth across the team. Serve as a consultant on complex issues involving current electrical products. Foster a collaborative and accountable team culture.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Participate in cross‑functional project teams supporting new product development and commercialization of medium‑voltage switchgear for electrical distribution. Collaborate with Insulation Technology, Vacuum Interrupter, Electronics, and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering teams to ensure designs are feasible and optimized for production. Understand space constraints, fit and function across disciplines.
Strategic Contribution
  • Drive basic and applied research initiatives to advance technology concepts and components for current and future product offerings. Identify and evaluate new technology opportunities that align with business objectives.
Compliance
  • Understand and comply with all applicable company policies and rules.
What You’ll Need To Succeed
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, power systems engineering or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
  • Demonstrated expertise in electromechanical or electromagnetic assemblies, including actuators, solenoids, magnetic mechanisms, energy storage systems, sensing technologies, and control interfaces.
  • Experience designing and developing medium‑voltage power distribution equipment, such as reclosers, sectionalizers, fault interrupters or switchgear.
  • Knowledge of IEEE and IEC standards governing high‑voltage and high‑power testing of medium‑voltage power distribution equipment.
  • Ability to define test objectives, instrumentation requirements, acceptance criteria and data analysis methods for high‑power or high‑voltage testing with an understanding of test circuit design and simulation.
  • Experience using oscilloscopes or data acquisition systems to collect electrical or mechanical test data.
  • Proficiency with Python, MATLAB, Minitab or comparable tools for data analysis, automation and test‑data interpretation.
  • Skilled in effective problem‑solving and leading project planning initiatives.
  • Great communication skills (written, verbal, listening, and presentation) able to partner with and communicate with customers, both technical and non‑technical.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with tight deadlines, including the flexibility to work extended hours when necessary.
  • Strong desire to success with a sense of urgency and a "make it happen" attitude.
  • Great computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Office applications, specifically MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Power BI or other similar systems.
Preferred (but not required)
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
  • Participation in technical standards bodies, IEEE PES, CIGRE or similar organizations.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software such as Solid Edge, SolidWorks or equivalent.
