Job summary

Okta is seeking a Staff level DevOps Engineer to join a fast, collaborative, and highly skilled team. The role focuses on building secure, enterprise-grade PAM products with modern tech including Kubernetes/EKS, RDS, DynamoDB, Redis and OpenSearch.

You will own microservices, drive automation, and mentor junior engineers. Applicants should have 7+ years in backend development (Go/Java/C++), strong PostgreSQL experience, and a deep understanding of cloud architectures, CI/CD, IaC, and security

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent is required
• 7+ years of backend programming experience in Go, Java, or C++, with Go preferred
• 4+ years with PostgreSQL or equivalent relational databases; database design and queries a plus
• Strong understanding of cloud deployments, IaC, observability, secrets management, CI/CD, secure coding, and compliance
• Deep knowledge of REST APIs and building/integrating them
• Experience with AWS, Redis, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, Kinesis, Kafka, and Docker
• Familiarity with Agile software development processes

Responsibilities

What you'll do

• Leverage cutting-edge AI pair-programmers and LLMs (such as Copilot and Claude) to accelerate the development of secure, enterprise-grade Privileged Access Management (PAM) products
• Act as a core contributor to Okta's FedRAMP initiative
• Work with engineering teams to design, develop and deliver cloud-based infrastructure projects on a modern tech stack (Kubernetes/EKS, RDS, DynamoDB, Kinesis, MKS, Redis, OpenSearch, Docker, Terraform on AWS)
• Drive evaluation, development, and rollout of microservices
• Operate, support, and upgrade shared services and frameworks. Scale these as their usage inevitably grows along with Okta's business
• Evaluate and scale existing systems to meet specialized requirements and support Okta's future business needs
• Lead design and code reviews to ensure systems are scalable, redundant, and multi-tenant. high programming standards by writing unit and functional tests
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and fix services and frameworks the team owns
• Evaluate system performance and resolve bottlenecks
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior developers
• Collaborate with architects, QA, product owners, security and operations engineers

What you'll bring

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent; master's preferred
• 7+ years of extensive programming experience in modern programming languages like Go, Java, or C++ especially in backend services. Go is preferred.
• 4+ years experience working with PostgreSQL or equivalent relational database systems. Experience with designing and querying databases with optimization in mind is a plus
• Immense passion for doing the right thing to help Okta's technology stay ahead of its anticipated business growth
• Solid technical grasp of architecting, implementing, tuning, and debugging some of the largest cloud deployments in the enterprise world
• A good understanding of computer science fundamentals such as data structures and algorithms
• Experience with fundamental Cloud building blocks like IaC, Observability, Secrets Management, CI / CD pipelines, secure coding practices, and compliance
• Deep understanding of REST APIs and proven experience building and integrating them
• Experience with AWS, Redis, Elasticsearch / OpenSearch, Kinesis, Kafka, and Docker
• Knowledge of network security, authentication, and authorization
• Strong commitment to, and experience with, software engineering best practices
• Familiarity with Agile software development process

Below is the annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in the San Francisco Bay area is between:

$194,000 — $267,000 USD

Below is the annual base salary range for candidates located in California (excluding San Francisco Bay Area), Colorado, Illinois, New York and Washington. Your actual base salary will depend on factors such as your skills, qualifications, experience, and work location. In addition, Okta offers equity (where applicable), bonus, and benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), flexible spending account, and paid leave (including PTO and parental leave) in accordance with our applicable plans and policies.
