Job summary

BHG Financial is seeking a Senior SQL Server Database Administrator to manage, optimize, and secure mission‑critical SQL Server environments. You will drive advanced T‑SQL development, performance tuning, high availability, and disaster recovery, collaborating with development and infrastructure teams.

We want an independent thinker with a strong record in database administration, capable of handling security, data migrations, and production triage with minimal downtime.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of hands-on SQL Server DBA experience.
  • Senior-level T-SQL skills (query optimization, indexing, complex joins).
  • Deep understanding of SQL Server internals (locking, blocking, tempdb, memory, I/O).
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical abilities.
  • Experience with backups, HA/DR, and capacity planning.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel during the first 6 months and ~5% thereafter.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and administer SQL Server environments (on‑premises and cloud).
  • Develop and optimize complex T‑SQL code including procedures, functions, views, and indexes.
  • Monitor health and performance using native and third‑party tools.
  • Implement HA/DR solutions and manage Always On availability groups.
  • Collaborate with developers to enforce best practices and support releases.

Who You Are

We are seeking a Senior SQL Server Database Administrator with extensive experience managing, optimizing, and securing mission-critical SQL Server environments. Proven expertise in advanced T-SQL development, performance tuning, high availability, and disaster recovery. Great communication skills working independently and collaborating with development and infrastructure teams. Proven experience finding database and system issues before they happen. A strong independent thinker who will bring their expertise in database administration.

What You'll Do
  • Design, implement, and administer Microsoft SQL Server environments (on-premises and/or cloud)
  • Experience with On Prem SQL, Azure SQL and Managed Instance.
  • Strong experience work with large Terabyte databases.
  • Develop, optimize, and maintain complex T-SQL code including stored procedures, functions, views, triggers, and indexes
  • Perform advanced query tuning and execution plan analysis to improve performance
  • Monitor database health, capacity, and performance using native and third‑party tools
  • Implement and manage High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) solutions (Always On)
  • Expert level setup and administration of SQL clusters and always on Availability Groups.
  • Manage and implement Change Data Capture
  • Manage backup, restore, and recovery strategies; perform regular DR testing
  • Ensure database security through role-based access, encryption, auditing, and compliance controls
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, root‑cause analysis, and performance bottlenecks
  • Automate administrative tasks using T‑SQL, SQL Agent jobs, and PowerShell
  • Collaborate with developers to enforce database design and coding best practices
  • Support application releases, schema changes, and data migrations with minimal downtime
  • Experience working with sensitive data and removing data from lower environments.
  • Strong experience working with Auditing solutions – SQL Audit, Extended Events or custom monitoring accounts and user access.
  • Other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need
  • 10+ years of hands‑on SQL Server DBA experience
  • Senior‑level T‑SQL skills (query optimization, indexing strategies, complex joins)
  • Deep understanding of SQL Server internals (locking, blocking, tempdb, memory, I/O)
  • Strong experience with performance tuning and monitoring.
  • Experience with SQL Server versions 2016 and above
  • Solid knowledge of backup/restore, HA/DR, and capacity planning
  • Experience supporting large, high‑transaction databases
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and documentation abilities
  • Travel requirement: All roles require travel during the first 6 months of employment to attend the BHG Oars in Experience. After the initial 6 months, ongoing travel is expected at approximately ~5% annually for periodic team on‑sites, team meetings, and cross‑functional collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance, or SQL Server on Azure VM
  • PowerShell scripting for SQL Server automation
  • Exposure to DevOps / CI-CD pipelines for database deployments
  • Experience with data migration and upgrade projects
