Illumina in San Diego is seeking a Staff Bioinformatics Scientist to design and implement signal processing and bioinformatics algorithms for genomic data analysis on Linux.

You will optimize multi-threaded C/C++ software, analyze data, and collaborate with external teams to enable end-to-end workflows for researchers and clinicians worldwide. A strong background in statistics, signal processing, and programming is required; experience with Python and Git is desirable.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or PhD in bioinformatics, biology, engineering, CS, mathematics, or related field.
• Minimum 6 years of related experience with a Master's degree.
• Experience with signal processing and statistical methods.

lllumina's Primary Analysis team specializes in designing algorithms and developing software to detect genomic data from signals contained within images. Algorithmic challenges in this area include compensating for signal impairments introduced by optical, chemical, and mechanical systems. Implementation challenges include managing parallel tasks, optimizing memory accesses, and improving the speed and accuracy of genomic base calling. We develop methods to address these challenges by focusing on high reliability, speed, and completeness of results. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team in developing analysis solutions for use by researchers and clinicians worldwide.

Requirements

• Experience with signal processing, data analysis, and the application of statistical approaches
• Experience with C++ is preferred, but other languages (e.g., Java or C#) will also be considered (Minimum: intermediate level with understanding of object-oriented design)
• Ability to define the architecture, develop, and debug software applications
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Personal initiative and ability to work effectively as part of a team
• Superior written and verbal communication skills
• Be curious, detail oriented, and analytical, with a proven ability to learn quickly

Desired

• Experience with communications theory and information theory
• Experience with time-series analysis and interpretation of temporal data
• Experience with Python and Python visualization libraries
• Experience with multi-threaded software, real-time systems, and/or software acceleration
• Familiarity with Agile software development processes (e.g. Scrum)
• Experience with using version control systems such as Git

Education & Experience

• Master's degree or PhD in bioinformatics, biology, engineering, physical sciences, computer science, mathematics, statistics, or equivalent
• Minimum 6 years of related experience with a Master's degree

The estimated base salary range for the Staff Bioinformatics Scientist role based in the United States of America is: $155,600 - $233,400. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects long‑term growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
