Job summary

Black & Veatch is seeking a structural engineer focused on Battery Energy Storage System foundations and related infrastructure. You will design multiple structural systems, collaborate across disciplines, and contribute to energy projects with a focus on safety and quality.

You will lead structural efforts on EPC projects, mentor junior staff, and participate in improving engineering standards while supporting flexible, hybrid work options across the U.S.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
• Minimum 5 years related work experience.
• Ability to pass pre-employment onboarding requirements such as background check, drug screen, and driving records.

Responsibilities

• Execute structural analysis, calculations, and sketches for BESS foundations and energy infrastructure.
• Support EPC projects with project specifications and procurement assistance.
• Supervise engineers and technicians; lead production teams and act as the responsible charge.
• Perform construction-phase duties: site visits, RFIs, and review of submittals.
• Manage design budgets, schedules, and change control per BV standards.
• Coordinate with other discipline engineers and provide technical guidance.

The Opportunity

This position is focused on the design of structures and foundations for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities, helping make the energy grid more resilient and accommodating of renewable energy sources. This engineer will design a variety of structural systems, broaden their design experience, and collaborate with other disciplines, while delivering critical energy infrastructure projects to the community. BVs broad portfolio of projects also provide the opportunity to participate in markets such as Data Centers, Substations, Power Generation, Water, to name a few. Black & Veatch provides complete engineering, procurement, and construction new asset and operating asset services in the following areas:

Key Responsibilities

• Execute structural analysis, perform calculations, and prepare sketches and drawings for the design of supporting structures and foundations for BESS equipment and other energy infrastructure.
• Support fast‑paced EPC projects generating project‑specific specifications and assisting with procurement process.
• Supervise structural engineers (both in the US and in overseas offices) and work with structural technicians in preparation of structural drawings and specifications. Is responsible for leading production teams and serving as the responsible charge for projects.
• Perform construction phase engineering duties such as site visits, responding to RFI’s, and review of contractor submittals.
• Perform project administrative tasks, which may include any/all of the following: preparation of design fee estimates, monitoring progress against budget and schedule, management of project changes, and implementation of Black & Veatch Quality Control requirements.
• Coordinate work with other discipline engineers.
• Lead the structural efforts on EPC projects with construction values of up to $50M
• Provide guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies. Assist in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards.
• Provide technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines. Support continuous improvement efforts. Provide guidance and direction to others.
• Implement resource management strategy including managing resources for a small group.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active PE License
• Proficiency using 3D structural analysis and design software (i.e. RISA-3D, STAADPro, etc.) for steel and concrete design
• Previous structural experience in utility, energy, renewables, telecommunications, or similar fields.
• Strong communication skills, both with internal interdisciplinary teams as well as external client and construction teams.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.
• Minimum of 5 years related work experience.
