Reddit is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer for the Safety and Moderation org. You will drive ML-assisted detection, scale backend systems, and shape product strategy in a remote-friendly US role. You’ll lead engineers, collaborate with data science, and influence architecture across the site.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years in backend development, strong Go/Python/Rust/Ruby skills, a CS BS, and a bias toward action in fast-paced environments. Equity is offered along with comprehensive benefits.

The Safety and Moderation organization builds detection, automation and tools that help keep Reddit safe, healthy, and scalable in accordance with Reddit Rules. In this team on safety, we focus on proactive detection of platform violating content and users so we can take appropriate corrective action.

We’re looking for a Staff Backend Engineer, who has interest in using applied ML to improve our automated detection and applying appropriate enforcement. We are looking for an engineer who thrives in a dynamic environment, working across systems and product surfaces to drive impact.

This is a high impact role where you will drive related technical & product strategy, operations, architecture, and execution for one of the largest sites in the world.

Responsibilities

• Work cross-functionally with product, data science, operations and other engineering counterparts to execute on product and business strategy to keep our platform safe.
• Contribute to the full development cycle: ideation, technical design, development, test, experimentation, analysis, and launch. You’ll be reviewing code and design docs,and help shape our roadmap.
• Lead a team of thoughtful, fast-moving, and motivated engineers. Set and define standards that improve developer workflows, recommend best practices, and help coach and mentor engineers on the team to further their professional development.
• Innovate on new solutions and continuously learn and improve your technical and non-technical abilities.

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages; Go, Python, Rust, Ruby.
• BS degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field of study or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks and keep projects on schedule.
• Entrepreneurial spirit. You are self-directed, innovative, and biased towards action in fast-paced environments. You love to build new things and thrive in ambiguity and even failure.
• Experience partnering effectively with cross-functional teams in a fully remote environment and the ability to discuss complex topics with technical and non-technical audiences.

This job posting may span more than one career level. In addition to base salary, this job is eligible to receive equity in the form of restricted stock units, and depending on the position offered, it may also be eligible to receive a commission. We set standard base pay ranges for all roles based on function, level, and country location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including, skills, depth of work experience and relevant licenses/credentials, and may vary from the amounts listed below.

The base salary range for this position is:

$217,000 - $303,900 USD
