Job summary

OpenFn is hiring a Staff Back-End Engineer to join our remote team. You will help connect government systems, design scalable backend services, and drive architectural direction for our Elixir/Phoenix and Node.js stack.

This is a fully remote, contractor role across Europe/Africa time zones. You’ll own end-to-end development, contribute to security and reliability, and work across time zones using GitHub and collaboration tools.

Qualifications

• 8+ years building and operating backend services for customer-facing products.
• Experience designing backend service architectures, not only extending existing ones.
• Experience building backend services with Node.js.
• Experience operating services where reliability and scale have direct consequences for users.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate across time zones in a small, distributed team.

Responsibilities

• Deliver features end to end, from proposal to production.
• Build core capabilities for connected systems and credential sharing.
• Set architectural direction across the backend and service interfaces.
• Establish consistent patterns for code, docs, and tool usage.
• Translate security findings into architectural changes and production deployment.
