Job summary

Community Legal Services seeks a Staff Attorney for its Phoenix office. This is a two-year, time-limited position involving travel to the Yuma office at least twice monthly to represent clients in family, housing and eviction, consumer, employment and public benefits matters.

The attorney will interview clients, provide advice and direct representation, prepare applications, and handle court appearances and administrative proceedings while advancing access to justice for low-income Arizonans.

Qualifications

  • Must be a member of the Arizona State Bar or eligible for admission upon hire.
  • Strong preference for candidates with experience in legal services and interest in landlord/tenant, family, and consumer law, and poverty-focused civil justice.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews applicants and clients; provides legal advice, brief service and direct representation; completes applications for services and performs file management.
  • Represents clients in court and administrative proceedings; negotiates settlements; engages in community education and outreach activities.
  • Conducts legal research; participates in strategic advocacy to remove barriers to access to justice for low-income individuals; performs other duties as assigned.

Community Legal Services(CLS) is a team of highly motivated individuals, who provide legal assistance, advice orrepresentation, self-help materials and legaleducation so people can know their rights.We focus on helping survivors of domesticviolence; assisting victims of consumerfraud and abuse, protecting tenants fromunlawful/unfair practices by landlords, foreclosures, legal problems affecting agricultural workers, wage claims and other employment matters, and federal and state programs affecting people's health and economic stability. We are dedicated to addressing economic, racial and other inequities by delivering legal services and education to vulnerable members of the community.

DESCRIPTION

Community Legal Services is seeking a Staff Attorney for its Yuma Office.This position will be located in Phoenix and is a time-limited position of two years. Thisposition requires a significant amount of travel and/or after hours to visit clients whoreside and/or have Court in Yuma, Arizona. Travel at least twice a month to the Yumaoffice is required as is additional travel as case load requires. A significant portion of thetravel will be between Phoenix and Yuma; however, may involve other outlying offices asneeded. Staff attorney will engage in practice of law to low income individuals in areasthat include but are not limited to, family law, housing and eviction, consumer, employment, and public benefits.

QUALIFICATIONS

The qualified applicant must demonstrate Community Legal Services'core values - Collaboration, Excellence, Respect and Humanity along with a commitmentto economic and racial justice for clients and the community. Candidates must be a member of the Arizona State Bar or eligible for admission upon hire. Strong preference will begiven to candidates who have worked in legal services and/ or have a demonstrated interest in landlord/tenant, family, and consumer law, as well as an interest in eliminatingpoverty-based inequities in the civil justice system by providing high-quality legal advice,advocacy and assistance to low-income Arizonans.

Interviews applicants and clients; provides legal advice, brief service and directrepresentation; completes applications for services and performs file management; represents clients in court and administrative proceedings, and other appropriate forums;negotiates settlements; engages in community education and outreach activities; conducts legal research; actively participates in strategic advocacy to eliminate systemic barriers to access to justice to persons with low incomes. Performs other duties as assigned.
