Job summary

Washington Innocence Project seeks a Staff Attorney to manage a statewide caseload involving claims of actual innocence. You will develop cases from investigation through DNA testing, post-conviction litigation, evidentiary hearings, and appellate review, working directly with incarcerated clients and collaborating with investigators, experts, paralegals, interns, volunteers, and pro bono counsel.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree and active membership in the Washington State Bar Association, or eligibility by motion.
• At least five years of criminal law practice as a licensed attorney.
• Strong legal research and writing experience for complex matters.
• Experience communicating with incarcerated clients or trauma-affected clients.
• Ability to manage multiple long-term matters and meet deadlines.
• Commitment to public-interest law, equity, and criminal legal reform.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality client-centered representation to incarcerated individuals.
• Develop factual and legal theories from records review and investigations.
• Draft and argue post-conviction motions and appeals.
• Prepare for evidentiary hearings and witness interviews.
• Coordinate with investigators and experts on forensic and other topics.
• Maintain clear client communication about goals and progress.
• Contribute to grant reporting and policy initiatives.
