Job summary

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Health and Human Services, Division for Children, Youth and Families seeks a Staff Attorney for the Southern Nashua District Office to provide onsite legal counsel in child protection matters.

The attorney will litigate in NH courts and administrative hearings, develop legal strategies, interpret statutes, and advise DCYF staff and management on federal and state law and agency policy.

Qualifications

• JD required with four years’ active legal practice.
• Must be a member of the New Hampshire Bar Association in Good Standing.
• Knowledge of judicial procedures, NH statutes, state and federal child-protection law.
• Ability to prepare pleadings, briefs, and memoranda and to research effectively.

Responsibilities

• Litigates on behalf of DCYF in child abuse/neglect and related proceedings.
• Represents DCYF in court, pre-hearings, and administrative hearings.
• Assists DCYF CPSWs in case preparation for litigation.
• Confers with DHHS staff, outside attorneys, law enforcement and judges on DCYF cases.
• Provides ongoing consultation and training to ensure best legal practice for CPSWs.
• Acts as liaison between DCYF and court personnel to ensure timely communication.
• Advises the DCYF on interpretation of state/federal law, rules and agency policy.
• Plans legal strategies in line with federal/state mandates.
• Keeps leadership informed of litigation activity and related matters.
