Job summary

Material Bank is seeking a Staff Applied Scientist to advance search and discovery across its material marketplace. You will prototype, test, and partner with engineering to productionize novel retrieval and recommendation approaches.

The role focuses on building robust search ranking, exploration of data-driven strategies, and advancing query understanding and NLP to handle real-world user queries. A hands-on mindset and collaboration with cross-functional teams are essential.

Qualifications

• Track record building search, recommendations, or ranking systems that shipped to real users and moved the numbers.
• Advanced degree in CS, ML, statistics, or applied math, or equivalent hands-on experience.
• Deep understanding of search and recommendation systems, including retrieval, ranking, and relevance.
• Strong query understanding and NLP, including semantic and embedding-based retrieval.
• Hands-on prototyping and implementation of ideas; language you code in is not restricted.
• Experience deploying ML or data systems to production or partnered on deployment.

Responsibilities

• Improve search retrieval and ranking to help members find and discover.
• Build our recommendation systems from the ground up with robust algorithms.
• Explore data to define strategy through exploratory analysis of behavior and catalogs.
• Advance query understanding and semantic parsing for diverse real-world queries.
• Raise data quality by identifying and fixing catalog-related issues.
• Prototype and ship end-to-end solutions, collaborating with engineering for productionization.
• Iterate visual and color approaches for image-based search and color matching.
• Develop evaluation frameworks and experiments as traffic grows.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and catalog teams to ship improvements.
